Frogwares, the developer of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, has answered many questions about the game recently. Among those answers is whether the game is linear or open world.
Players can explore the island and find new quests after finishing the first main quest. The number of quests you choose is completely up to you.
The main quests, as well as most side quests, will have different outcomes based on your deductions and moral choices, and the game itself has several different endings. A few of the side quests will be linear, but there will be plenty of sleuthing deductions and moral decisions.

Part of the open world will be extra side quests, there are also Disguises, Puzzles, and Decorating the mansion.
Besides decorating the mansion, you will be rewarded with furniture or have the option of buying it from vendors. When the situation warrants it, Sherlock will also fight from time to time in addition to solving puzzles.
