Starfield to Launch With a Twist on New Game Plus

A surprise twist

It's a special event when a Bethesda game drops, especially if it's a new IP. Starfield is the latest in the BGS catalog, and the hype has been surreal surrounding this title. Many questions have been asked, but a surprising revelation was revealed about Starfield during Gamescom 2023.

Starfield to be first Bethesda game with New Game +

For the first time, a Bethesda game will have New Game+ when Starfield launches on September 6, with early access beginning on September 1. In an interview with GQ Magazine, Todd Howard states:

"Starfield delivers BGS’ most immersive role-playing since 2006’s Oblivion. It gives you the flexibility and options to carve out a unique identity, and even adds a unique and exciting twist on New Game+ to incentivise continued and repeat play."

What stands out in this statement are the words "exciting twist," and leaves numerous possibilities of what New Game + could be in Starfield. Speculation is already rampant; after all, there is no precedent of New Game + in a Bethesda title, so this exciting twist could mean anything.

One theory revolves around time traveling and black holes, which does sound like a logical implementation of this mechanic. Traveling back to the beginning of the game as the same character makes sense when you look at it from a game's perspective, but you need a believable reason narratively. Using a black hole to send your character back to the start of Starfield to redo their actions would be a cool, in-universe way to accomplish this.

Another meaning could be that you are left free to explore the world after completing the game. But the words exciting twist make it hard to believe this, as most games opt for this post-completion exploration. Still, the interview does not further detail what twist Starfield will take on New Game +, but the wait is almost over to find out. In the meantime, check out early impressions of Bethesda's upcoming space RPG.
