How many companions can you have in Starfield?
Technically, you can only have one active companion at any given time. This is the person you tell to follow you from dialogue options. That being said, there is a way to keep more characters by your side. By adding people to your ship's crew, you will be able to have more than one person ready to swap out as a new companion as needed.
