Chances are, if a game has a rather large following, then it's more than likely going to attract one or two modding firms. Such is the case with Valheim, a survival-based Viking game on PC. Although not officially supported by Iron Gate AB, the modding community has taken it upon themselves to tweak the game using various tools and techniques.
Of course, if you want to join the fun, then you should definitely back up your files before installing any form of third-party software. You can do this by copying the Valheim folder in your application files and then pasting it to another location on your PC. If any of the mods fail, or if you simply wish to revert back to your old save files, you can restore the original files.
Installing Mods in Valheim
- Install BepInExPack (Framework)
- Download Unstripped DLLs (Code)
- Install Vortex (Mod Manager)
- Download Mods via Nexus Mods
- Enable/Disable Mods via Vortex
BepInExPack
Download BepInExPack Valheim. This is a framework used for Unity modding. You will need to install the zip file and drag it into your Valheim install folder before taking any further steps.
Unstripped DLLs
Download Valheim's Unstripped DLLs. This is another crucial step you will need to take before installing any individual mod files. It is recommended that you use Vortex to download these files, a mod manager that can create temporary files rather than replace the original DLL folders.
Nexus Mods
Select the mod which you would like to apply to Valheim via Nexus Mods. Once a file has been chosen, make sure to download it via Vortex. Doing so will allow you to syphon out downloaded mods and enable/disable them through its GUI.
