Roblox acquires anti-cheat technology company Byfron

Byfron could be making changes soon.

Just one month after Roblox's CEO David Baszucki took the RDC stage to discuss the platform's future plans for implementing anti-cheat systems, Roblox acquired Byfron Technologies. On Oct. 11, 2022, Roblox posted an official statement to the Roblox Developer Blog that announced the acquisition of the anti-cheat software development company and promised big changes coming to the platform soon. This statement details that the two companies are "combining forces to greatly expand Roblox’s anti-cheat capabilities."

It's no secret that Roblox has its fair share of hackers, exploiters, and cheaters running rampant on the platform—whether they prefer to lay low and exploit in the background by using the typical aimbots and speed boosts, or create full-on havoc and attack/take over events and experiences (enter the Paris World incident), it seems as though they never fully go away. Now, however, with the acquisition of Byfron, the platform will likely begin to see site-wide anti-cheat systems become more prevalent.

As stated in the Roblox Developer Blog, these systems will not only be server-sided, but client-sided as well, meaning that they will search players individually for mods, exploits, and cheats when launching, rather than just doing a general, server-wide scan. Also stated in this blog is the assurance that "integrating Byfron’s technology into the Roblox platform will improve experience security, protect the competitive landscape, and to allow developers to spend more time building their experiences."

It's unknown exactly when these systems will be fully integrated within Roblox, but considering the success that Byfron has had with Fortnite, Overwatch 2, and Apex Legends, they should be arriving on the platform soon.
