Early reviews of Fire Emblem Engage are out, and it looks like it will be closer to older Fire Emblem games than to titles like Three Houses. One such mechanic, the Weapon Triangle, has been missing a few entries. Not only is it coming back in Fire Emblem Engage, though, but it has been reworked to have some major gameplay implications.
Weapon Triangle returns in Fire Emblem Engage
The Weapon Triangle is a Fire Emblem mechanic whereby weapons can gain advantages over each other in a rock-paper-scissors fashion. In this case, swords beat axes, axes beat lances, and lances beat swords. A weapon with triangle advantage over another will be more accurate and, in some cases, more powerful.
While not present in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fire Emblem Engage is bringing back the weapon triangle with an added touch. Now, a weapon with triangle advantage can inflict a Break status where the enemy can't counterattack.

This actually will likely be an immensely powerful aspect of play in Fire Emblem Engage. In past games, skills like Windsweep were quite valuable since they could be used to chip powerful enemies without fear of counterattack. Now, it looks like every weapon will have a Windsweep effect so long as it has triangle advantage.
While this certainly seems powerful, the tradeoff is that enemies can use it as well. Apparently, foes in Fire Emblem: Engage will prioritize inflicting Break before attacking with other foes. This makes tanking on Enemy Phase less of a viable strategy.
