Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not an easy game. Just playing through the tutorial level teaches just how brutal the game can be on you. Not only that, but the tutorial is more like an introduction to the most basic of mechanics! However, did you know there is a lot more to the game than meets the eye? There are things the tutorial fails to mention, and things you could be doing to make your life slaying demons a bit easier. Interested in learning a few tips and tricks about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty? Keep on reading, dear reader, for you're in for a treat.
Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Gameplay Tips and Tricks
You can use Deflect while Blocking
While holding the block button, you can actually still use deflect to ward off dangerous attacks. This is often a very safe way of deflecting beyond the traditional, as even if you miss a deflect, you'll still defend against the incoming attack. We especially recommend doing this in NG+ (New Game Plus), as enemies and bosses deal significantly more damage there.

Jump-light attacks are sometimes the best option
Pressing the jump button and the light attack button launches an extremely fast swing for pretty much every weapon type in Wo Long. These attacks are treated as normals for stat calculations, making them very good for generating large amounts of Spirit without over-committing and applying status effects. Jump-lights are especially good with heavy weapons that have slow wind-ups to their swings.
The color of your Qi actually matters
Normally, when you look at your Qi, it is of a grey or white color. However, when you have enough Qi built up to level up, the color of the number actually changes to a noticeable gold color. This helps you plan whether or not you should trek through dangerous territory before or after leveling up.
Don't button mash your light attack string
As tempting as it is to keep pummeling some poor sob unfortunate enough to be on the fatal end of your weapon with repeated clicks, we highly recommend stopping before you get humbled. Many enemies can escape your deadly grasp by activating a Critical Blow in the middle of your combo. If you're button-mashing, you're getting hit by this and taking a big chunk of damage in the process. Use calculating clicks so you aren't caught with your pants down and can react, especially to those foes with higher morale than you.
Make use of Deflect Counterattacks
When you have a single button that lets you prevent all types of possible damage in the game (Deflect), it is easy to forget that you actually have other, often better, options for preventing damage. In the case of Deflect Counterattacks, landing a successful one will remove all Negative Spirit you have accumulated regardless of the amount. Not only that, but Deflect Counterattacks actually have fewer start-up frames than normal Deflects, meaning it's often possible to stop attacks coming at you, while you're mid-swing using a Deflect Counterattack. Use it.
Don't underestimate Positive Spirit
While you can use your entire arsenal of Wizardry and Martial Arts as long as you aren't at -1000 Negative Spirit, using some of that stuff while in Positive Spirit gives them extra effects and mechanics. For example, some Martial Arts and Spirit moves, in general, grant you Super Armor (immunity to staggering from most attacks and damage reduction) if used while in Positive Spirit.
Some Martial Arts can be used in mid-air
Although the game tells you this if you look hard enough, it is easy to miss. Many Martial Arts abilities can actually be used while in the air, and they often have a difference in speed or mechanics attached.
Virtue Stats affect Wizardry Spell Damage
This isn't stated anywhere in the game, but upon testing, the amount allocated stat points in a specific Virtue does, indeed, affect the amount of damage behind Wizardry spells associated with it. Putting 20 points into Fire Virtue will cause your fire spells to deal less damage than if you put in 70 points. This is a game-changer for obvious reasons, and we urge you to test it for yourself for confirmation.
