In Gangs of Sherwood, some of the Merry Men are perfect for supporting a full team and others can handle themselves fine in solo play. Here's a look at which one you should be depending on the size of your squad.

Even though this game will not be featured on Game Pass, it may still be well worth trying out with some friends. If you know anything about Robin Hood, you'll quickly recognize these main heroes.

Which hero should you be in Gangs of Sherwood?

There are four different characters, part of the Merry Men, you can choose from when jumping into Gangs of Sherwood: Friar Tuck, Little John, Robin of Locksley, and Maid Marian. If you're playing with a full squad of four players, you each will get a choice at one of them. This is the perfect way to play so that all their abilities can harmonize with each other, and you don't have any weak spots.

However, you can also play the game solo. In this case, you will get the choice of one character and go in alone. While this is perfectly doable, you're going to want to pick a character that is better suited to fight on their own.

Robin of Locksley

Robin is a well-rounded character, as he should be seeing he's the leading figure of the Merry Men. He utilizes his bowmanship to hit enemies from about any range, keeping them at bay and supporting his team from a distance. I find Robin one of the best characters for solo play due to his range and abilities. You don't need to get up close and personal, which allows you to avoid being surrounded by enemies, and his quick-firing arrows deliver quick justice. Plus, he's light on his feet and can grapple up to high spots if he does find himself in a precarious situation.

Little John

Little John is the ultimate brawler of the group and is all about enormous damage. His heat gauge allows him to charge up and then initiate a rampage mode, unleashing fury on enemies all around him. While his heavy damage is definitely helpful, especially for those bosses, he's also a close-range hero. I find it makes him better suited for team play when he can have other ranged characters watching his back.

Maid Marian

Maid Marian is another excellent character for ranged combat, utilizing her magnetic throwing knives to lock onto enemies from a distance and trigger them all for considerable damage. She also has great crowd control with her chain whip, which she can swing around her and knock enemies away. She can knock down hanging obstacles with her knives and grapple up to safety as needed. These are all great for supporting her team but also make her well-equipped to complete missions independently, much like Robin.

Friar Tuck

Friar Tuck is a heavy-handed hero carrying around a giant mace that can unleash enhanced copper projectiles. While he can deal decent damage, he is also geared toward crowd control with AoE attacks. One of his best abilities is drawing the enemy's attention to himself while healing his allies simultaneously, making him the best hero for support.

How to switch characters in Gangs of Sherwood

The great part about Gangs of Sherwood is that even if you pick a character at the start of the experience, you can still switch things up as you like. As long as you don't have a full team, you can change your character to any of the other unused Merry Men.

To switch characters, you must be back at HQ; you cannot switch characters in the middle of a mission. If there are characters that were not picked at the start of the experience, they will be hanging out at HQ, usually around the mission table. To switch to them, approach them and hold the interaction button (E on PC, X on Xbox, and Square on PlayStation).

All your progression on the character will be saved each time, so don't worry about losing any techniques you unlocked. Plus, you can change back at any time you want, as long as they are not being played as and you're not in a mission.

Being able to switch characters is the perfect opportunity to try out each of them. Whether you're playing solo or multiplayer, all these characters have something unique to offer. Give them all a try and see who fits best for you.
