Best Age of Mythology Retold Mods

If you’re playing Age of Mythology: Retold and are starting to see some of the quality of life cracks in the game, mods are the perfect way to patch up some of the aspects that can become tedious. From adding some of the original game back in to tweaking the limits of your Pantheon, you can install all of the best Age of Mythology: Retold mods directly from the game.

Mods are only available for those playing Age of Mythology: Retold on PC. This is because the console version of the game doesn't yet support modding.

Mods can be created by players using the Editor (found in your account menu under Mods). By clicking on Editor, you'll be redirected to a blank, grassy canvas, where you can create the next best mod for Age of Mythology: Retold.

Top 10 Age of Mythology: Retold Mods

Some of the mods in this top 10 are the most downloaded mods currently available. I haven't included any mods that require the DLC or other paid content besides the base Age of Mythology: Retold game. Others are mods that I thought would be fun additions to your gameplay.

To find the mods in the list below, head over to the Mod tab when you have Age of Mythology: Retold loaded up, click Browse Mod, and use the search bar.

10. Bottom Left Resources

Bottom Left Resources is a basic mod for Age of Mythology: Retold, which changes the location of your resources to the bottom left corner of the screen. At present, your resource list is at the top of the screen near your God Powers, which some may find awkward when going through the motions of their preferred build order.

With this mod, you can see your resources as you're building, which should stop you from over-building or over-producing units. I've definitely experienced several instances where I've run out of resources because I'm not paying attention to the list at the top of my screen.

9. Original Voices Mod

If you're a fan of the original Age of Mythology, you may prefer the voice acting from that game. With almost 600 ratings at the time of writing, you're certainly not alone.

Installing this mod will just replace any of the current voice acting with the lines from the original voice actors in the 2002 Age of Mythology game.

8. Greek Realism

I'm not quite sure why this one is called "Greek Realism" because the Greeks famously had bronze armor, not silver armor. But, the creator is right in saying that it better matches their in-game architecture.

For players of Age of Mythology: Retold who want to change up the designs of their Greek Pantheon units, installing the Greek Realism mod is a great choice. It's also a good starting point for players who aren't used to installing mods because it doesn't affect much of the game.

7. Large Hero Glow

This mod is perfect for players who are struggling with the accessibility of Age of Mythology: Retold. The current glow on any Hero Units is quite small and hard to see at a distance. If you have a crowded town, you may struggle to find your Hero Units after production.

Instead of that tiny glow that fades into its surroundings, you can download the Large Hero Glow to help you locate your Heroes better. The glow essentially doubles in size, making it much easier to see where your Hero Units are in a crowded space.

6. ATLANTIS

Considering that we have an Atlantean Pantheon as part of the four factions in Age of Mythology: Retold, it's a bit strange that there isn't an Atlantis map. There's plenty of mythology about Atlantis, and descriptions of what the land looked like from Plato's writings. Atlantis was, supposedly, a city with concentric rings of land and water, with a central island in the middle.

User JeHathor created a map of Atlantis for players to install as a mod and enjoy. A map like this will require you to build docks and produce ships, as well as your standard villager and military units. Not all maps need docks because they're mostly or entirely land, but this one would definitely benefit from a dock or two.

5. Extended Minor God Selection

Picking from just two minor gods when you know that each major God has a short list of gods that they can offer you is a little annoying. No matter what major God you choose to lead your campaign, they have six minor gods on their roster that you'll be offered the powers of throughout your game.

Each time you advance to the next Age, you'll pick a new minor God. Instead of just choosing from two, the Extended Minor God Selection mod lets you choose from all of the minor gods for your Pantheon, no matter which major God you originally chose.

4. Deadly mythic units

Mythic Units are already a bit boss to play, but they probably should have more power than they do considering how long they take to produce and all of the prerequisites and resources needed.

This mod gives your Mythic Units a few extra bonuses when they're fighting against human soldiers; and, considering human soldiers will make up the bulk of any player or AI's army, this is a great mod to have.

3. 2x Population and resources tweaks

This made the list because it's a great mod, but I can't say I wasn't slightly swayed by the image that player Crevette chose to represent their mod. The 2x resources and population tweaks mod is exactly what Age of Mythology: Retold needs for longer games.

At a certain point (about an hour or so into your match), you will hit your population limit. It's annoying because you can't do anything about it in-game other than send your army off to fight underprepared (bad idea) or kill off some of your villagers (not as bad, but still not ideal for resource-gathering purposes).

Forget all of that, this mod will double your max resources and you can enjoy an increased population limit. Win-win.

2. Gladiator worlds

I liked the cooperative nature of the Gladiator Worlds mod. A lot of mods are for individual players, but this one was purposefully created so that you and your friends can play together in new worlds that will test your teamwork and strategies.

Gladiator Worlds is essentially a new mode for Age of Mythology: Retold. One where your party must survive six different rounds with their own unique challenges. Between games, you'll be automatically sent to the shop to level up before you play the next round.

1. JustABetterGame

JustABetterGame is a great mod for you to increase the overall quality-of-life features of your game. With double the population limit, twice the amount of gold and wood, raised housing limits, and a bigger town center limit.

Similar to the 2x Population and resources tweaks mod, this mod from S4iR0X adds more quality-of-life improvements to the game. I can't say much that I didn't already bring up for Crevette's 2x mod, but the major difference between the two is JustABetterGame is focused more on the population limit of different buildings.

How to install mods in Age of Mythology: Retold

Installing a mod in Age of Mythology: Retold is super easy. Once you've located the mod that you want to install in the Mod Directory, just click install.

You can check which mods you have installed in the Mod Manager.

That's it! Installing mods in Age of Mythology: Retold is designed to be really user-friendly. To uninstall, just click the remove button in your Mod Manager.
