Best Staves in BG3

Some amazing spell slingers.

To get the most out of every class in Baldur's Gate 3, you'll need a complete set of all the best possible gear, especially weapons. One of the many weapon types is the staff or quarterstaff; while none of them do much melee damage, they can have some powerful magic that makes carrying one well worth it.

Best Quarterstaves in Baldur's Gate 3

There are three main classes that use quarterstaves in BG3: Sorcerer, Wizard, and Druid. However, any spellcaster can make use of them. These weapons can provide extra spells, stronger attacks, and even grant resistances to certain types of damage. There are more than 30 of them in BG3; here is a selection of my personal favorites.

Incandescent Staff

As long as Quartermaster Talli is still alive either at the Last Light Inn or in Moonrise Towers, you can purchase this staff from her in Act 2. Depending on Talli's friendliness meter and the Charisma of the character interacting with her, the staff can cost anywhere from 1300 to 1700 gold. It's sort of the fire counterpart to the Mourning Frost, as it gives the wearer a boost to fire spells. It grants:

  • Ranged Spell Attack +1
  • Resistance to Fire Damage
  • Fire Bolt (Evocation Cantrip)
  • Fireball (Level 3 Evocation Spell)

Caitiff Staff

This item is found in the Lower City of Baldur's Gate in the shop called Devil's Fee. It can be purchased for around 700 to 800 gold, and it's a great one for Warlocks that can hold it.

  • Arcane Enchantments: The holder gets a +1 to all Spell Save DC and Spell Attack Rolls.
  • Caitiff's Restoration: Replenish 1 expended Warlock spell slot per Long Rest.

Harper Sacredstriker

This Quarterstaff is only available for sale from Sorcerous Sundries in Lower City inside Baldur's Gate. It'll cost you around 800 gold and grants the wearer Spiritual Weapon at level 6 once per Long Rest. This spell is quite a powerful one; it brings a floating weapon into battle that can be used to trigger advantage, which can be helpful with characters like Astarion, who will be able to use his sneak attacks for extra damage.

Staff of Interruption

This staff can only be found in Act 3 at Old Garlow's Place. You have to Help the Hag Survivors, after which you'll receive it as a reward. The staff allows anyone who holds it to cast Counterspell at level 5 once per Long Rest, which makes it pretty strong for any staff-wielding class.

Mourning Frost

Mourning Frost is one of only two Quarterstaves on this list that is available in Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3. This staff can be found in the Underdark, broken into three pieces. Once all three pieces are found and combined, you will have an amazing staff for any companion focusing on cold and ice spells. I like it for Druids, who have several ice spells at this point in the game.

  • The first piece is found on the drow named Dhourn that has been turned to stone by a spectator to the west of the Selunite Temple entrance to the Underdark.
  • The second piece is on Filro the Forgotten—a drow hanging around by the Sussur Tree.
  • The third piece is in the cave that the Myconid Sovereign opens for you if you complete his mission to kill the Duergar. There is a drow body inside with this final piece.

Double-click on any one of the pieces to put the staff together. Once it's in one piece, you can equip it to receive:

  • Heart of Ice: You deal additional cold damage when dealing cold damage.
  • Insidious Cold: Cold damage can now inflict Chilled.
  • Ray of Frost: Grants the Ray of Frost cantrip.

Staff of Cherished Necromancy

This staff is amazing for any Wizard specializing in Necromancy spells. It can be found in the Lower City in Act 3, from an NPC named Mystic Carrion. This living zombie is located in the location called Philgrave's Mansion, near the water.

  • Heightened Necromancy: Creatures gain Disadvantage on Saving Throws against your Necromancy spells.
  • Life Essence Harvest: Absorb life and energy from anything you kill while holding this staff, gaining its Life Essence, once per Long Rest.

The Spellsparkler

The Spellsparkler is only available for those who save Councilor Florrick from the burning building in Act 1. It grants the user Electric Veins (when the wielder deals damage with a spell or cantrip, they gain 2 Lightning Charges), which pairs up well with a lot of the Lightning Charge armor from Act 1.

Staff of Spellpower

For anyone looking to take down Rafael in his own home, the Staff of Spellpower is tucked away in the House of Hope. It's a strong staff, granting its user the following:

  • Arcane Enchantment: Gain a +1 bonus to all Spell Save DC and Spell Attack Rolls.
  • Arcane Battery: The next spell you cast doesn't cost a spell slot. This is usable once per Long Rest.

Markoheshkir

This is probably my favorite weapon in the entirety of BG3; it works amazingly well for any spell caster class. It's found in Ramazith's Tower in Act 3 and grants:

  • Arcane Enchantment: Gain a +1 bonus to all Spell Save DC and Spell Attack Rolls.
  • Arcane Battery: The next spell you cast doesn't cost a spell slot, once per Long Rest.
  • Kereska's Favour: Imbue yourself with elemental energy sourced from the draconic goddess, Kereska. It absorbs and then gives resistance to a magic element.
