Dead Space Marker Explained

Marker is the source of the Necromorph mutation virus in Dead Space. It's a mysterious obelisk in the shape of a double helix made from what appears to be stone. Its primary purpose is to convert enough living creatures to Necromorphs to trigger the event known as Convergence, where a new Brother Moon is born. Brother Moons are gigantic Necromorph creatures that have a planetoid shape, and they are the source of the Marker signal.

During the storyline of Dead Space and its sequels, the players discover the existence of multiple Markers, some bearing a different look from others. The original Black Marker was found on Earth by DredgerCorp and the government in the 23rd century. The Marker was initially kept from public knowledge by the Earth's Government. They hired Michael Altman to study the Marker and its effects.

During this research, he discovered that the Marker carried a certain signal that the Sovereign Colonies and later the Government of Earth copied to create their Markers, which had the same cataclysmic effects as the original one. The signal, initially causing insomnia and dementia to everybody still with a pulse within its range, carries the genetic code to create Necromorphs from the tissue of the dead.

The Black Marker is a centerpiece of worship in the Cult of Unitology, an omnipresent entity that pulls the strings from the shadows in the Dead Space universe. Not fully realizing what the Marker represents and does, they elevate its promises of rebirth and unification to evangelical levels and serve to bring the Marker's purpose to fruition.
