What is Unitology in Dead Space Lore?

Marker is love, Marker is life!

Dead Space is a visceral survival horror in the third-person that sets standards across the board. One of its many strengths lies not only in superb, atmospheric gameplay experience and cutting-edge graphics, but in its vast and well-developed back story. While wandering through the USG Ishimura's bowels, you will frequently see shrines and ritualistic markings strewn about the crew's living quarters. These are all connected to the infamous Unitology cult.

What is the Church of Unitology from Dead Space backstory?

Unitology is a religion in the universe of Dead Space, originally started around the research on the ubiquitous Markers by Michael Altman. He was not a believer of Unitology or its teachings during his lifetime, but inadvertently became its prophet and a figure of worship.

The Cult of Unitology spreads the belief in transformation and rebirth through worshiping the Marker. It all began with the discovery of the Black Marker in the 23rd century, in the Chicxulub crater. Earth Government and DredgerCorp initially hid the discovery from the public to discourage belief in aliens. Still, Michael Altman, who had been tasked to research the Marker, brought it to public knowledge. Soon, he became a hero and a figurehead to the nascent Cult of Unitology, which started worshiping the Marker and its creators.

The Black Marker, with its mysterious inscriptions, has puzzled the Unitologists for centuries since its discovery. They believe the Black Marker promises unity through transformation and rebirth, occupying an absolute centrality to Unitology's symbolism and doctrine.
