Do I need to play Dying Light 1 before Dying Light 2?

Suggested, but not required.

Dying Light 2 is the sequel to 2015's survival horror game from Techland and tells the story of a world destroyed by the infected. These undead enemies swarm the streets and set the stage for a new story in 2022's release, but will you need to play the first game before starting Dying Light 2?

While playing the first Dying Light will give players an increased insight into the world of this Techland series, it is not a requirement for those new to the franchise. Dying Light 2 features a new protagonist, setting, and supporting characters. For example, players play as Crane in Dying Light 1 in a Turkish city known as Harran, wherein Dying Light 2, players assume the role of Aiden as he journeys through the European city of Villedor 15 years after the events of the first game.

Dying Light 2 makes several nods to the original game, including lore and characters previously introduced in the first iteration of the Dying Light series. Still, this information only enhances players' experience and won't hamper newcomers' enjoyment. Those disinterested in story content are sure to enjoy the parkour, combat, and unique abilities in Dying Light 2 regardless of the setting, story, and venue.
