Is Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes story canon?

It's complicated, to say the least.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is the second game within the Warriors sub-franchise of Fire Emblem. Three Hopes is set in the same world as Fire Emblem: Three Houses and stars the same characters as Three Houses. Three Hopes takes place in the same timeframe as Three Houses and features a brand-new lead character. This may leave you wondering if Three Hopes is canon to the main storyline of Three Houses.

What is canon in Three Houses?

The canonicity of Fire Emblem: Three Houses is complicated. The original Three Houses features four different routes, with each storyline diverging when Byleth decides what house they want to teach for. Though the first half of Three House is more or less the same in all four timelines, they diverge greatly once the war commences. Each route has a different ending, and each one is drastically different from the other.

None of the four routes within Three Houses is more canon than the other, and it is up to the player to decide what is canon or not. With over thirty playable characters in Three Houses, there are multiple different pairing options that players can decide at the end of each route. That means there are four main timelines, with a plethora of alternate endings, depending on who gets married.

Is Three Hopes canon?

As is, there is no main canon storyline in Three Houses, just multiple different timelines. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes further complicates things by taking place in a universe where Shez replaces Byleth as the main playable protagonist. Then, there are another three routes for Shez to pick, each route having its own storyline separate from the others.

The three routes in Three Hopes are not connected to the main four routes in Three Houses, though, and shouldn't be considered canon to the events that happened in Three Houses. However, the backstory and lore that was established within Three Houses are further elaborated in Three Hopes. That includes appearances from family members of main characters that never showed up in Three Houses and further expansions of some of the characters' personalities. Those aspects of the game should be considered canon to the overall greater mythology of the Three Houses multiverse.
