Phasmophobia: Future Update Plans – Roadmap

Information on the Phasmophobia roadmap.

Phasmophobia has become a massive hit on Steam, as it has an overwhelmingly positive review scoring, and we do not blame it! Phasmophobia is a coop horror game where you or with friends become paranormal investigators and try to solve haunted locations' issues. Of course, you come equipped with a plethora of gear to figure out what type of ghost is causing the haunting; you can even have the dream job of being the chair guy and watch all the cameras for strange stuff occurring!

Kinetic Games have done a stellar job with Phasmophobia, and people are screaming for more updates, more content as they are hooked! What does Phasmophobia have in mind for future updates? Does it have any kind of future roadmap for content?

Phasmophobia Roadmap

Main Game Update

The second massive main game update has just hit Phasmophobia. Even though the Beta version of the game has been getting regular updates, Kinectic Games wants the main game patches to be as perfect as possible before it was released.

The full patch notes can be found here: Phasmophobia: Patch Notes

Next Beta Update

The next update for Phasmophobia is always in the works, and Kinetic games have updated the Trello Board to show fans what is coming in the next update. At this present time, there's a lot planned!

  • Nothing at the moment

In Progress

And the most important list of all, the In Progress list, what Kinetic Games are working on as of right now:

  • Beta bug fixing and balance changing

Released [BETA]

This section is everything that has already been added to the beta version of Phasmophobia. At this current time, these are not in the main game, as the beta version is a testing ground to see if everything is working correctly. It can become bug-free. And when it is perfect, it'll be added to the main game for everyone to play.

  • Allow players to hide behind furniture.
  • Add an FPS (frame per second) when VSync is turned off.
  • Optimize equipment, key, and bone spawning to prevent disconnects.
  • Male all ghosts slightly faster over time if they are chasing a player (expect Revenant.)
  • Don't make the Ghost move at the start of the hunt to stop confusion.
  • Optimize Prison and School (loading times and FPS.)
  • Make the Ghost fully open lockers and closets if the Ghost knows someone is in there (players will have to remain silent.)
  • Add a delay for the next hunt attempt if the Crucifix blocks the hunt.
  • Make the Ghost have a chance to remember the last known player location and check that area at the start of the next hunt.
  • Add player volume options to the server screen.
  • Add lockers and more hiding places to Grafton and Bleasdale.
  • Replace the farmhouse foliage shaders.
  • Equipment doesn't spawn if the host crashes when loading.

If you are interested in playing the beta, we have a guide on downloading it!

Released Main

This section is everything that has already been added to the main game Phasmophobia. The main game is for those who do not want to dive into the beta and test out the constant stream of updates.

  • Add new objectives
    • Detect a ghost with a candle.
    • Intermediate/Pro: Escape during a hunt with no deaths.
    • Professional: Use a smudge stick while the ghost is hunting a player.
    • Multiplayer: Get an average sanity of below 25 percent.
  • Change the photo reward system to be a quality level based on distance rather than a random value.
  • Add stats to the post game screen with information about the last game.
  • Replace the save file system to prevent corrupt save files.
  • Give each player a different color for the mini map and sanity monitors.
  • Make the ghost blow out candles if they are close.
  • Add bHaptics.

Future Updates

Phasmophobia has received many updates since it was first released. The Phasmophobia Trello Board is still constantly updated with new features and bug fixes that will be coming in the future. But they also have cards on everything they hope to add over the game's lifespan.

New Map

The Prison map is the latest map to be released, leaving three more in the pipeline.

  • A Small House Level, about the same size as Tanglewood, will eventually come to the game.
  • The Mansion, which by the sounds of things, could be massive.
  • The Apartment Building, so we think it'll be a smaller map for newer players to the game, or it might be based over in a complex, meaning it could ultimately become the biggest map in the game.

Backlog

These are in the backlog of things Kinetic Games need to catch up on. These are things that will be added slowly over time, as other priorities take precedent.

  • Make a small house level (Tanglewood size)
  • Add Weekly challenges
  • Add new Daily Challenges
    • Capture a three-star ghost photo.
    • Capture a Dirty Water photo.
    • Get the Ghost to hear your voice during a hunt.
  • Make Daily Challenges harder
  • Add more equipment
    • Night Vision goggles — Will likely show ghost orbs, limited visibility.
    • MEL Meter — Shows EMF and Temperature readings.
    • SLS Camera — Shows stick figures on a camera. The camera screen will be in the truck.
    • REM Bear — Toy Beare that plays sounds if the ghost interacts with it.
    • REM Pod — A different kind of motion detector.
    • Ovilus — Similar to the spirit box.

To-Do

The To-Do list is mainly things that will appear after the backlog is completed or if there is any spare time for anything else. Here are the main elements being in this list:

  • Add long term tracking stats.
  • Add a single-player button that does not connect to the server - only connect to the server when clicking the lobby button - change "play" for multiplayerMake weather a random chance in all maps.
  • Make the last journal page a group mechanic in the truck.
  • Add a new leveling system that scales the exp per level.
  • Add the journal to the main menu.
  • Make the Ghost have a chance to throw objects towards the player.

Rumors

There are a plethora of things being worked on, but the most notable is the potential addition of another game mode, where you play as the ghost. This is very akin to Left 4 Dead, when 4 players controlled the humans, and then 4 players control an array of zombies. If this mode comes to Phasmophobia, it will be an absolute hit, as AI can only work in so many ways, and with human knowledge, there could be an unbeatable ghost!

Hey, my name is Mark, and I'm a video game enthusiast! My earliest memory was playing Worms on the Amiga against my Godmother, yes the Amiga, massive box type thing, needed eighty-five thousand floppy disks to play one game, maybe a slight exaggeration. Ah, those were the days! I love RPG’s, and The Legend of Zelda series. Dogs are pretty awesome.

  1. How about catacombs as a level with a certain number of burial chambers within, or even an ancient Egyptian pyramid or similar tomb structure from across the globe, medical hospital perhaps, or even an abandoned village…………

    1. There’s tons of stuff they can add. But all the levels at the moment are all City-based, so an abandoned hospital would work even better if it was a mental facility. A massive Burial Crypt would be cool, underneath a Church or something, to keep it in the City.

  2. Allows Ghosts to speak during Hunts, would be very creepy.

  3. Would be be possible to have a 6 to 8 person team and then you could have multiple hauntings in one places.
My friends and I love this game, just stinks there are so many of us its hard for all of us to play together. One of us has to sit out and watch on discord. It just a thought or an idea. I also love the idea of a map maker. I love designing levels for game. These are just Idea i have and we talk about but otherwise I really enjoy this game.

    1. That would be awesome, especially on the bigger levels, like the Prison and the School. Maybe they’ll implement that in the future!

  4. I wish while playing the ghost would whisper. Would be very creepy with headphones.

    1. But wouldn’t that make it easier to locate? If def would make it creepier though!

  5. Im not sure if im supposed to be giving ideas so be free to delete. You should make it to where when someone dies ,they immeditely become on the ghosts team instead of players team. Make it to where the dead player can hunt at the same time as the other ghost. Make sure the dead player cant see the players so its not too easy. Make cars go down the road with scary people inside staring at the player as it goes down the road. Make more children ghosts. Make more jumpscares. Make ghosts that crawl on ceilings and walls. Id think it would be cool if you could use my name as a ghost name update. My nickname is Micky Swindle

    1. You can give me all of your ideas; I love to hear them, but I’m not part of Kinetic Games. I’m just a writer that writes about the game!

Hmm, some interesting ideas in there! I think they are implementing the more scary people, but around the houses instead, I believe. I think; personally, jumpscares would cheapen the game. The game is going down the route of pure horror for some; having a more intense atmosphere trumps jumpscares any day, ya know.

We’ve had many people comment about ghosts on walls and ceiling. It would be interesting! And sadly, I do not have the power to make Micky Swindle a ghost name. However, if I could hypothetically, what type of ghost would you want to be?

      1. id like to be a jinn

        1. and is there a way that kinetic games could see my comment about my nickname being a ghost name?

          1. like i mean more than one facial expression

          2. oh what about the ghosts making “evil” facial expressions

          3. like to where there body is hidden behind the wall but u can just see a head poking aroudn the corner

          4. thats weird lol i play phasmophobia every day but i have never seen that lol i guess im too paranoid that im looking everywhere else instead lol

          5. Oh really? It popped up in front of me a few times. I hated it haha

          6. ok thats fine. oh and would ghosts peaking around corners be too scary?

          7. Potentially, but they do appear suddenly which is far more terrifying ha, but they do that quite often.

          8. Not that I’m aware of sadly.

  6. I think the following would be really great:

    1. Have the ghosts mimic the player’s voices. The mechanic could be that the game records a short sound bite of something you’ve said, and then has a chance to play it when you’re not around to lure players into a location (this would be great on larger maps).
    2. Have ghosts take the form of players to lure them to a location.

    1. That would be epic and horrifying. With the size of the dev team unlikely but would be awesome. In the future, this game is going to be the most horrifying game in existence.

  7. These are things that the people I play with and myself would like to see:
    – ability to buy a second monitor to see the headcams and cameras that we place in the map for easier viewing on bigger maps
    – be able to see the cameras that we place on the floor map in the van so we know what camera we’re looking at
    – be able to move back and forth on the cams in the van to save cycling back through
    – adding fingerprints to the objects that have been thrown
    – potentially add “take a picture of footprints” as an optional objective
    – add voices for the ghost to whisper in a harsh, crackly voice just like when it “haa”‘s in your ear (i.e. “i’m right behind you”, “you can’t leave now”, “you shouldn’t have come here”)
    – be more flexible with the ghost event (we’ve had it play the piano, slam doors in our face, or sing to us and it’s weird that it doesn’t count towards a ghost event)
    – have items that you’ve touched reappear randomly in the house (if you touched a teddy bear in one room, and then it appeared in a different room that you walked into staring at you in the center of the next room, or having a room full of toys/bear turn and face you)
    – allow the spirit ghost to say more things, or even be able to communicate with dead teammates
    – have EMF have a different pitch in sound for each level of activity

we’ve all banked 100+ hours on this game, and are enjoying the creepy aspect of it!

  8. it is an amazing game i cant wait to see the future of it some things i really hope to see are ghost voices or even the ghost talking or crying in another room (almost like the child giggles or music) or even saying things like “you cant hide” while hunting to add some more scare factor. also i think a cool idea would be adding different kill animations when you die depending on the model or type of ghost it is i know this is a lot but I just really love the game and wanna help with ideas 🙂

  9. Good game, I think they should add more killing “effects” besides just ripping your face

    1. That’s a decent idea!

  10. they should add a monster that repeats things you have said to confuse teammates but during hunting it becomes muffled and or distorted.

  11. some sort of phone item to text teammates for those without mics or if you forget a walkie talkie but has a cooldown to be used

  12. I personally would like to see some more ways of dealing with a ghost in a hunt besides just running or crucifix or smudge sticks.

  13. Love this game, but several ideas that could take it to the next level.

    1. Nerf Thermometer, it’s broken.

    2. Add more maps! Yes I know it takes time.

    3. Add another Difficulty where your Sanity is nerfed and you can be hunted immediately, or add a ghost that ignores sanity completely.

    4. Add a ghost that can multiple it’s form, but only the original form is deadly.

    5. Add distraction noises during a hunt where it’s hard to pinpoint the ghosts location.

    6. Increase player and ghost movement speed on larger maps, namely asylum.

    7. Add more Jump Scares.

    8. Add a Ghost that can spawn creatures or insects that help the ghost locate a players location. Maybe they can behave like a wraith and ignore walls / doors.

    9. Add either a Ghost or the ability for current ghosts to manipulate players randomly during a hunt. Example, one players screen becomes darker or that player experiences a hallucinations of sort.

    10. Add a Ghost that has a chance to lock random doors during a hunt, not just the exit doors.

    11. Adding Ghosts that would be harder to distinguish which is which. Example, you can outrun every ghost in the game with the exception of revenant. Granted a Jinn’s ability causes a large increase in speed, but only for closing distance, you can still outrun it. It’s a little too easy to tell which ghost is which, so more player punishment would be nice.

    1. I love these ideas! The crew I run with came up with these ideas while we’ve been playing:

  14. I’d like to see a outdoor map like a Carnival or a large Strip Mall. Carnival would rock as things suddenly operate or light up! lol

    1. That would be interesting, but then ghost suddenly appearing will be more visible, less terrifying. They’ll have to work something out that works nicely!

  15. We need random ghost footsteps, talking, screams and possibly projections only certain players can see. I kinda want them to get rid of the whole 1 ghost room thing and rather we explore the whole house for clues.

    1. I agree with you on all counts. I would like the Spirit box to be more one-room allocated, as sometimes you walk about everywhere and the ghost just doesn’t reply to you, anywhere. Yes, it’s moving but ya know.

The ghost whispering in my ear is the worst part about the game, so yes I want more of it. The animations for the ghosts, I quite like how frigid they are. But the game terrifies me to no end so.

    2. While we are at it, I hope they add some animations for the ghosts.

  16. I have a couple of ideas.
1- For the ghost that crawls on the ground, would be cool if she can crawl on the ceiling too.
2- When the ghost gets more aggressive, the ghost should be able to lift you up to the ceiling and then drop you to the floor.
3- Throw you across to the other side of the room.
4- Other ways ghost can kill you like having a health bar when that reaches 0 you die.
5- Losing health by throwing you across the room or lifting you up to the ceiling and dropping you to the floor, getting hit by throwing objects.
6- Maybe first-aid kits for your health bar.

    1. Those are nice ideas! Personally, I think the game needs to up the psychologic horror factor even more than it currently does first. Having people stress over health might take away from the horror, in some way or another.

  17. Hi I think it would be an idea for some of the items we use.the batteries drain.when near a ghost presence.which means we would need to replace them.also how about a castle and hospital map.

    1. That’s a good idea. With a game like Phasmophobia, the ideas and maps really are truly endless. It’s terrifying in its current state, but give it half a year to a year, and it’ll become something nightmares are made of. I’m really looking forward to its future.

  18. I think new ghost characters should be add ie clown, dolls chainsaws and dolls that laugh

    1. And you had me up until clowns xD And yes, i would like the ghosts to be more interactive in general like speaking/whispering in every area of the map, being more aggressive. And, the most important point imo, you should not be able to outrun any of the ghosts. That would make the hunts and the game overall much more thrilling.
(Sorry, for grammar or spelling mistakes. English is not my mother tongue :D)

    2. You had me up until dolls… If a doll ever spoke to me I would nope out of the game so fast!

  19. this game just needs, more maps, a harder hard level, like adding a fourth uniec evidence

    1. More evidence would be nice, as a lot of people do tend to guess the third one. With a fourth piece, they can’t!

  20. i would love that you had to find out more about the ghost-like how it died and find objects in cupboards before you could leave

    1. That would be a really cool idea to add! I’m down for that!
