While you can purchase animals like cows and chickens from livestock stores, there are other animals in the wild you can add to your barn as well. Thankfully, befriending animals isn't too different from befriending other characters in the villages; it just takes a bit more work.

You will spook animals that you haven't built any trust with when you approach them in the wild. So, you're going to have to play it slow and use the sneak button in order to walk up to them. You will see a red exclamation mark above their heads if you spook them, and they will most likely run away. After filling at least one or two music notes with them, they should allow you to approach them without sneaking.

After you've approached the animal, you can click the Pet option. This will usually add up to two musical notes for them, which means they are gaining friendship with you. Along with petting them, you can also give them food to eat, much like how you give other characters gifts.

To give an animal food, open your inventory, select the food item, and press the Hold option on it. With the item in your hand, approach the animal and select the Give option. Most animals will not be picky about what food items you give them, but they will have preferences, much like the characters do about gifts. Some food items will fill up more of the musical notes than others, so try to keep track.

You'll be able to see the animal's friendship meter symbolized as musical notes above their head. You will slowly fill additional musical notes the more you feed and pet them. In order to fully tame an animal and bring it back to your barn or as your pet, you will need five to eight musical notes filled. You can only pet and feed animals once per day, so to earn their trust completely, you'll need to return several times.

To begin taming animals, make sure you have your barn up and running first. This will require progressing with the main quests until it has been repaired and allows you to enter.

Most animals that you tame in the wild will take up one slot in your barn. You will be able to hold more than one animal in your barn at a time, but the space will be limited until you have Doc upgrade it to a larger size. You can also hold one small pet inside your house.

Keep going out every day to find the animals and continue building their trust. Some animals can only be found in specific regions, times, and seasons, so be sure to keep track of them. You'll fill up your cozy barn in no time with all your favorite fuzzy pals.
