Can you remove gems from items in New World?

So many gems, so little sockets.

When it comes to enhancing your gear in New World, you will notice that your weapons and armor have sockets. These sockets allow you to put gemstones in your gear which will grant them different effects depending on what gemstone you place in them.

You may be wondering if you can remove gemstones from your weapon or armor after socketing them. The answer is no and yes. You cannot remove the gem from items in New World and get it back, but you can replace it with another gemstone to change the effect that item has.

This means that if you accidentally put a gemstone in a socket or want to change what effects your gear has, you will have to place another gem in that socket. As a result, once you put a gemstone in a socket, it is essentially tied to that item or gone forever if you replace it with another.

New World may introduce a mechanic that allows you to remove gemstones or swap them to other items, but for now, you can only replace them with other gemstones the same way you would place a gem in a socket. This means you should think carefully before placing a gem in a socket.
