Shelter is one of the most important features in Nightingale, as it determines which traits your beds and crafting stations will have. Below, you'll find every structure trait in Nightingale and how each one affects your base.
Every structure trait in Nightingale
Traits influence the efficacy of the beds and crafting stations used at your estate, either positively or negatively. By building a robust shelter, you can improve the speed at which you rest, craft new items, and refine materials. While beds and workstations share most of their traits, their respective functions are impacted differently. Below, you'll find every trait and effect in Nightingale, as well as the requirements for gaining each trait.
Workstations
To see a workstation's traits, approach it and press E, then select any item from the crafting menu on the left, even if you lack the required materials. A second menu will appear on the right; select the Station Traits tab to see any traits your workstation currently has.
| Trait | Requirement | Effect |
| Exposed | Station is not protected by a shelter. | Reduces structure efficiency. |
| Grit | Station is placed on open ground instead of a floor or foundation. | Refinement time is increased by 15 seconds. |
| Soggy | Station is exposed during rainy weather. | Refinement time is increased by 15 seconds. |
| Sheltered | Station is protected from the elements by a shelter. | Refinement time is decreased by 10 seconds. |
| Well Lit | Station is placed near a light source, such as a sconce. | While near a light source, refinement time is decreased by 10 seconds. |
| Warm | Station is placed near a heat source, such as a campfire. | While near a heat source, refinement time is decreased by 10 seconds. |
| Artisan | Artisan Card is in effect. | Crafted tools and clothing gain increased durability. |

Beds
To see a bed's traits, approach it and hold the E key. A radial menu will appear on your screen, allowing you to choose between different options. Click Inspect to see a menu with all of your bed's traits and respective effects.

| Exposed | Bed is not protected by a shelter. | Decrease Comfort score by 1. |
| Grit | Bed is placed on open ground instead of a floor or foundation. | Decrease Comfort score by 1. |
| Soggy | Bed is exposed during rainy weather. | During rain, decrease Comfort score by 1. |
| Rest Blocked | Bed has the Exposed and Grit traits. | The player cannot use the bed to rest. |
| Comfort | Bed is placed near other furnishings, such as storage containers or workstations. | Improves resting efficiency. |
| Sheltered | Bed is protected from the elements by a shelter. | Increase Comfort score by 1. |
| Well Lit | Bed is placed near a light source, such as a sconce. | While near a light source, increase Comfort score by 1. |
| Warm | Bed is placed near a heat source, such as a campfire. | While near a heat source, increase Comfort score by 1. |
