How to solve the Clockwork Castle gearbox puzzles in Sea of Stars

There are a few different puzzles to figure out once you enter the Clockwork Castle. While some of them are pretty self-explanatory, the puzzles containing the movable gearboxes will require a little more thought process and steps.

First Room

You'll encounter the first puzzle while opening the locked garden door. There are two branching rooms you need to explore, as there are two parts to the lock. The right side will take you into a room with a button to press to extend a bridge. You'll find the Garden Key in the chest across the bridge. The room on the left, however, will require you to solve a puzzle by moving a box into the correct spots and cranking the gear at the top.

Follow along with the images and steps listed below:

  1. To reach the gear at the top, you'll need a way to get up there. Place the gearbox in the left cubby, and some stairs will extend from the wall. You'll need to push the box using your wind gust with X or Square. Follow the image above to get it there smoothly, here's the order you should push it:
    • Left into the left corner
    • Up into the top left corner
    • Right into the top right corner
    • Down against the right nook
    • Left against the middle nook
    • Up into the cubby
  2. Once the gearbox is in the cubby, it will activate some stairs for you to climb up to the top. You'll now have access to the crankable gear, which will unlock the garden door. To crank it, use your grapple to hook it with B or O. You'll need to repeat this at least three times until it is all the way extended.
  3. Now that you've unlocked the gate, you'll need to move the gearbox over to the right cubby to be able to exit the room. To pull it out of the left cubby, use your grapple to pull the rope in between the two cubbies. This will dispense the box and allow you to push it over to the right and up into the left cubby. Now, you'll have a platform to climb up to exit.

Second Room

Now that you've made it through the garden door and further into the castle, you'll come across another gearbox puzzle, this time with even more steps. Here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Press the lever on the left side of the room to spawn in the gearbox onto the grided floor. Now that you have the box, you'll need to place it into the middle cubby to extend the stairs out and get up to the top floor. To do this, follow these movements by using your wind gust ability:
    • Push the box to the left until it hits the edge
    • Push the box down to the bottom left corner
    • Pull the lever on the right side
    • Push the box to the right against the ledge
    • Push the box up into the middle cubby
  2. With the box in the middle cubby, some stairs will extend and allow you to continue to the upper level. Here, you'll see another box you can push; you need to drop it down to the lower floor. To do this, follow these steps:
    • Use your grapple to pull the rope on the right side (this will lower the barricade in the middle so the box can cross over)
    • Push the box over to the left side
    • Wait for the barricade to rise again and then push the box to the right against the middle barricade
    • Pull the rope on the left to lower the barricade leading off the balcony
    • Push the box down and off the side of the balcony
  3. Now that the box is on the lower level, head back down the stairs. You're going to have to use both boxes now to place them in both cubbies and open the exit. Follow these steps:
    • First, push the box you just dropped to the far left, below the left cubby
    • Then, pull the rope to dispense the box from the middle cubby
    • Push the middle box over to the far right, below the right cubby
    • Now, push both boxes up into their specified cubby.

Once this is done, a large staircase will extend out and reveal a door for you to go through. You've successfully completed these puzzles and can now continue through the castle. Plus, the next few ones are much more doable now that you understand how these things work.

These puzzles can be challenging at first, but once you get the hang of them, you'll be breezing through them. They can also offer some chests, which hold some loot that can help you make some gold fast, so always be on the lookout!
