To find the Skeleton Chest, you're not required to find the Key first; you can do those two things in any order. However, for this part of the guide, we have already assumed you've obtained the Key.

Sea of Thieves | The Cursed Rogue Tall Tale Guide | How to Find the Skeleton Chest

This guide is broken up into two steps: obtaining the chest and how to return it. When you initially receive The Cursed Rogue Tall Tale Quest Book, you'll find that two chapters that leave hints to two different islands. The first one is for locating the Skeleton Key. The second one is for locating the Skeleton Chest, which was buried by a pirate named Bill. Bill writes in very simple and vague sentences, so understanding what he is trying to say is sometimes tricky.

Step One: Locating the Chest

Similar to the Skeleton Key, the Skeleton Chest is guarded by a group of skeletons. However, unlike the Key, you'll need to not only defeat these skeletons but also dig in the appropriate spot to reveal the Chest. This dig spot can always be found where you found the group of skeletons guarding it, so try not to run too far off as you fight them.

Since the game randomly selects its location from six different islands, we cannot determine exactly where your specific Skeleton Chest will be located. However, we have provided the entire list below, along with images that may help determine where you'll find the Chest and its guardians. To determine which island you need to go to, simply match the image in your book with one of the images below.

Crook's Hollow

There is one primary cave on Crook's Hollow. To find the chest, you'll need to go into the northern side of that cave, opposite the Ancient Vault found in the Shroudbreaker Tall Tale. You will find the group of skeletons at the end of the cave, directly next to the Endless Lizard rock painting. Once they are defeated, dig in the spot they are sitting.

Discovery Ridge

The image and location of the Skeleton Chest on Discovery Ridge.

The skeleton crew on Discovery Ridge can be found at the base of the giant hill. The easiest way to get to them is to park your Ship near the beach on the eastern side, then walk straight up the hill. You'd think they would see the giant boat pulling up, but you can still take them by surprise! Once they are defeated, dig in the spot they are sitting.

Lookout Point

Lookout Point is a small island, so finding the skeletons guarding the Chest is simple. Lookout Point is far South on the map, so you've likely parked on the island's northern side. Walk onto the beach and follow the path that goes Southwest, and you'll find them there. Once they are defeated, dig in the spot they are sitting.

Mutineer Rock

The image and location of the Skeleton Chest on Mutineer Rock.

Mutineer rock is a tiny chain of islands on the southern end of the Ancient Isles. You will likely see the skeletons guarding the Chest from your boat as you approach the islands. If not, you will find them sitting on the Southern islet, on the beach. Once they are defeated, dig in the spot they are sitting.

Plunder Valley

Plunder Valley is one of the more challenging locations to find the Skeleton Chest. When you arrive at the island, head into the central cave system on the West side of the island and continue West into the cave. You'll eventually come to a small cave room with a giant bird statue. The best way to find this room is to listen for the voices of the skeleton crew guarding the Chest. They are in this room with the bird statue. Once they are defeated, dig in the spot they are sitting.

Thieves' Haven

If you have determined that your Chest is at Thieves' Haven, you'll have your work cut out for you. Defeating the group of skeletons guarding it isn't exactly difficult, but finding them can be if you don't know how to get to the top of the island. If you circle the island's outer edges,  you'll find paths that lead up to the top. Alternatively, you can go into the middle with the destroyed ship and climb the ladders. At the top of the island on the Southeast side are statues that look like three heads. The skeletons guarding the chest will be sitting in front of it. Once they are defeated, dig in the spot they are sitting.

Step Two: Return the Artifacts

Now that you've found the Skeleton Chest, it's time to open it! Tow the Chest back to the Ship, and grab your Skeleton Key. When you open it, you'll find a broken piece of a telescope and a broken piece of a star map. These items are useless at the for now, so don't bother trying to figure out what to do with them.

The game will prompt you to return the artifacts to Madam Olivia. She, as you recall, is stationed at Plunder Outpost. Set your sails, hoist your anchor, and head there to determine where to go next.

Warning: Spoilers Below

Madam Olivisa performing a spell on broken artifacts.

When you get to Plunder Outpost, be sure to grab the broken items you found in the Chest, as she'll need both of them. Walk up to Madam Olivia in the Order of Souls tent and turn in the artifacts. She will take them, make some more ominous conversations, and perform a spell to turn the broken artifacts into a Compass.

We'll skip her explanation of what you need to do with this Compass and just tell you instead: it always points to Briggsy. In our next article, we will cover How to Find and Defeat Briggsy. If you feel you can handle this on your own, you can always skip to our guide for The Cursed Rogue Hidden Journal Locations!
