As modding and custom content continue to be a hot-button issue in The Sims 4 community, Maxis and EA push forward with concrete plans. Now, players who want to make or use modded content are being redirected to the Overwolf platform.
During the Behind The Sims Summit live stream event held on Oct. 18, 2022, EA and Maxis announced that modded content will have a new dedicated home at Overwolf. This includes CurseForge, the mod hosting platform that Overwolf acquired in 2020. Players can download mods on the CurseForge site free of charge and have a streamlined experience adding them to their Sims 4 game files.
On the Overwolf blog, the company went into further detail about the matter. The partnership promises to provide players with a more efficient, safe, and enjoyable experience. Overwolf claims that using its platforms for The Sims 4 will make mods easier to search for and preview. They also claim that compensation will be provided for modders who use their platform. This is especially notable after the move by EA to no longer allow modders to use paid services like Patreon to host their creations.
A ModSquad was also announced by both The Sims YouTube channel and the Overwolf blog. This group comprises already established modders of The Sims 4 game, such as HeyHarrie and Baby Hapum, who have been invited to host their mods on CurseForge before the announcement. It seems the plan here by both parties is to ensure content is already hosted on the platform for players to jump into using the site immediately.
