Getting started as a streamer can be a frightening prospect, even if you already have bought all your gear. Luckily, YouTube is a pretty beginner-friendly place for the first-time streamer or those looking to branch out from Twitch. All you need to do is to learn how to set up your first stream, and you will be going live within a matter of minutes.

To stream from YouTube, you do need to have an account. You can stream from both your PC and your phone, given that you downloaded the mobile app.

Here is the step-by-step process of starting your first Youtube stream:

  • Click on the Create button in the top right corner of your computer or phone screen.
  • You will be given two options, choose Go Live.
  • If your on a computer, you will need to select your webcam.
  • You will now need to make a name and add a caption for the video.
  • Choose or take a thumbnail photo

Once this is done, simply pop over to OBS or Xsplit to set up your game broadcast.

Setting Up Your Game Capture

  • If you are using OBS, click on the encoder section and copy the stream key.
    • You will want to go to service and choose Youtube. From there go to server and click Youtube ingest server, there will be a box for you to paste your stream key into.
    • Hit the + button to choose whether you want to capture your monitor or directly from a running game.
  • If you are using Xsplit, simply get your Youtube ID from here and paste into your channel ID field. Once done, you simply need to confirm that you wish to link your account.
    • Click add source to choose to either capture your screen or select game capture if your desired game is already running.
  • Once you have your game up, hit the broadcast button on OBS or Xstream.
  • Return to Youtube and hit the Go Live to begin your stream.

You will want to share your video across your social media platforms to let your friends and fans know about your broadcasting. Once you're done with your first stream, make sure to play with some of Youtube's video editing tools to hone in on your favorite parts.
