How to Complete Ghosts Of The Past Side Quest in The Witcher 3

Meet the big old Witcher (again).

The Witcher 3 features several complex characters who offer a lot in the story and your overall experience. One of them is Letho, who Geralt can encounter again in one of the side quests in The Witcher 3. Letho was one of the main characters in the second game, and in this side quest, you learn more about the former antagonist's personal conflict. Here's how to complete the Ghosts of the Past side quest in The Witcher 3.

How to start the Ghosts of the Past side quest in The Witcher 3

Unlike the regular quests that follow the main storyline, you cannot trigger this side quest through one of the notes you see on a notice board or simply by speaking to a character in the game. To start Ghosts of the Past, you need to travel to it. Head to Reardon Manor, which is on the north side of Downwarren in Velen. When you get there, enter the largest building while successfully avoiding the traps. The quest triggers when you go inside the barn.

How to reunite with Letho in The Witcher 3

You can use your Witcher Sense to find a ladder that's on the floor of the barn. Examine the object to pick it up. This prompts the cutscene where Geralt reunites with Letho. As the two Witchers speak, a group of scouts arrives outside.

Letho asks you to aid him in taking them down. Regardless of your answer, you end up fighting them. They are not at par with the powerful monsters you normally deal with in the game, so this part is fairly easy.

Should you cut the quest short or help Letho?

After the quick fight, Letho tells you he intends to talk with his old friend Louis. The game gives you two choices. You can either respond, Love to see that, which will prompt you to go with Letho and proceed with the quest until its full end. You can also opt to say Good luck instead, which cuts the quest short, and you'll never see him again. Unless this is your first playthrough and you are, for whatever reason, rushing to the end of the main storyline, we recommend you go with the first option and see this quest through until its end.

Should you free Letho or unintentionally foil his plan?

If you decide to see this quest through, you will quickly travel with Letho on horseback to visit Louis. The big old Witcher also has a lot of interesting things to say to you during this quick journey. During the meeting with Louis, your responses do not have much impact. There's a fight against a group of fairly weak bandits in the end which you can easily finish. In the end, a wounded Louis reveals the man's location with a pin on Letho's head. After this encounter, you set off to Lindevale with Letho.

Once you get to Lindevale with Letho, a cutscene plays. He instructs you to stay out of the confrontation he's about to have, which is a subtle warning that intervening in the events that are about to unfold foils his plan that you do not know of yet. Letho fights with the bounty hunters and falls, prompting you to run up to them, giving you two choices. You can select You're good as dead as a response where you fight and kill the bounty hunters. You can easily accomplish this but doing this foils his plan of faking his own death.

We suggest you opt for Don't want trouble as a response, following Letho's orders. You tell them to take Letho's medallion instead of his head. Whatever response you go with, Geralt discovers that Letho is alive and takes him inside.

Letho wakes and reveals that he planned to fake his own death to be free from these bounty hunters. So if you intervene and kill his attackers, his plan fails. But if you follow his orders of not intervening, this finally frees Letho. Regardless of the outcome, Letho plans to go off somewhere else. Should you need his help, later on, you can invite him to Kaer Morhen. The end of this last conversation with the old Witcher completes the Ghosts of the Past quest.
