The Nintendo Switch is my favorite way to game, thanks to its handheld abilities and incredible catalog of games. Let's take a look at some of the best Nintendo Switch games of 2023.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

There's no question that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch and an absolute must-have for fans of the series. The sequel to Breath of the Wild took what made the first game great and improved upon it. The freedom in how you explore the open world and options to approach puzzles allow for so much creativity. While the lack of traditional dungeons is a letdown, Tears of the Kingdom makes up for it with its incredible physics system and stunning aesthetic.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the jolt of life the Mario series needed. Returning to 2D platforming, Mario Wonder has some of the best-looking levels, all with a unique twist through the Wonder Flower. With it, levels experience wild and creative transformations, complete with a delightful gimmick. Add to this the charming cast of characters, thrilling environments, and new Badge system, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is one of the best multiplayer games on the Nintendo Switch.

Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars has easily become one of my favorite RPGs thanks to its gorgeous 16-bit art style, engaging turn-based combat, and delightful world. It nails the fine line between nostalgic and modern, blending the best features of both. The charming cast set up the story and kept me glued to my seat throughout my playthrough. Narrative moments are paced with tactical and action-packed encounters against fantastically designed enemies and bosses to create an amazing experience.

Octopath Traveler 2

Square Enix's Octopath Traveler 2 is a delightful JRPG that pays homage to the classic games that came before it. The first thing that must be praised is the fantastic soundtrack, but the game's highlights don't stop there. All eight characters are endearing in their own way and give players numerous ways to start the game and build a party. Octopath Traveler 2's combat system is turn-based and tactical and enhanced with the Break and weakness system.

Metroid Prime Remastered

Metroid Prime was first released in 2002, and the remastered version lives up to the hype with a beautiful HD facelift. The classic experience reaches new audiences, following on the heels of Metroid Dread, and gives veterans a new way to play the game. The combat, puzzles, and exploration make Metroid Prime one of the best Metroidvanias and should not be missed by anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch.

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG is another remake, this time of a 1996 SNES title by the same name. Mario and friends embark on yet another exciting adventure, with a fun cast of characters and a delightful world that makes this game so memorable. Its short length makes it perfect for the Nintendo Switch's pick-up-and-play abilities, and it stands the test of time. If you've never played Super Mario RPG, I highly recommend giving this RPG a go.

Fire Emblem Engage

Fire Emblem Engage takes the best parts of the series and combines them to create one of the Nintendo Switch's best SRPGs. While the character design and story may not be for everyone, as mentioned in my review, the gameplay is the true gem in this game. The tactical combat has never felt better in Fire Emblem, thanks to the Emblem Rings and returning characters. While I enjoy the interactions and bonding of the series, Fire Emblem Engage has made it more accessible and toned it down compared to other games in the series.

Dave the Diver

Ever wanted to go deep sea diving and run a sushi restaurant? Look no further than Dave the Diver! This charming and cozy adventure features 2D and 3D gameplay to create a unique experience full of charm, humor, and laid-back gameplay. The day is spent fishing, and the night serving up delicious meals with your freshly-caught fish. Various mini-games flesh out the already addicting gameplay loop and give the game more replayability.

Fae Farm

While Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are the kings of cozy games on the Nintendo Switch, Fae Farm certainly gives them a run for their money. Run the magical farm of your dreams solo or with up to three friends as your fully customizable character. You can raise animals, grow crops, befriend and romance NPCs, and more. However you wish to play Fae Farm, you can do it at your own pace and live your life as you see fit.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

2023 is the perfect year for Nintendo remakes, and Advanced Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp fits into this category perfectly. Fire Emblem fans will find themselves at home with Advanced Wars strategic combat. A charming facelift gives the game a fresh new look, but the challenging combat remains. You'll meet a delightful cast of characters and uncover a heartwarming story between the two remastered games.
