Best Mage Class Specializations

The three specializations within the mage class are Necromancer, Knight-Enchanter, and Rift Mage. Necromancer is the specialization of Dorian Povus, the character players find when aligning themselves with the mages. Knight-Enchanter is the specialization of Vivienne, a character players can find at the party they are invited to after announcing themselves in Orlais. Lastly, Rift Mage is the specialization of Solas.

Necromancer Breakdown

Necromancer focuses on debuffs, healing, and creating other targets for the enemy. This focuses most on dealing spirit damage and is the most natural specialization to take for a healer mage. While not incredibly strong, this option can give healing characters some extra bite.

Rift Mage Breakdown

Rift Mages focus on crowd control via manipulating the veil and creating rifts. This can be very useful for players who want to be more of a tactician within their group. However, it is not the most powerful option within the mage specializations.

Knight-Enchanter Breakdown

Knight-Enchanters are the most powerful mage specialization and can allow players to complete an entire playthrough solo. This specialization allows players to turn their staff into a spirit blade. As a mage tank, this class line provides a blade, shield, cloak, and disruption field.

Best Rogue Class Specialization

The three specializations of the rogue class line are Artificer, Assassin, and Tempest. Artificer is the specialization of Varric Tethras. Assassin is the specialization of Cole, the companion found when players align themselves with the Templars. Tempest is the specialization of Sera, the character found from following the notes left by the Friends of Red Jenny in Orlais.

Artificer Breakdown

Artificer is a crowd control-based class line offering lots of different traps and buffs for companions. It offers not only standard bear traps but also elemental mines and the ability to trade places with another of the party. While offering a tactician position within the group, it certainly isn't the best specialization.

Tempest Breakdown

Tempest is an elemental and poison-based AOE damage dealer. Focus on debuffing enemies and trapping them in fields of poison. While being a more powerful damage dealer, this still isn't the best specialization.

Assassin Breakdown

Assassin is a heavy DPS glass cannon build with the ability to turn invisible. This class line is nearly exclusively about dealing damage and nothing else. This is the ultimate option within the rogue specializations, being incredibly deadly, with an easy escape.

Best Warrior Class Specialization

The three Warrior class specializations are Champion, Reaver, and Templar. Templar is the class specialization of Cassandra Pentagast. Reaver is the specialization of The Iron Bull, a companion retrieved in the quest to go after The Bull's Chargers. Lastly, the Champion is the specialization of Blackwall, the character found in the search for the Lost Wardens.

Champion Breakdown

Champion is the classic tank build option with some crowd control. This class line mainly focuses on building up the player's armor and lasting in a fight as long as possible. However, as this class line doesn't really focus on much support of damage, it isn't the best specialization.

Templar Breakdown

Templar focuses on providing support to the rest of their party and debuffing magical enemies. This can offer a great deal to players wanting to have their party at their side and survive every fight. However, unless this is the general playstyle the player is going for, it isn't a super powerful specialization.

Reaver Breakdown

Reaver is a heavy DPS and AOE warrior, with a balance of sacrificing their health to deal more damage. This is the best warrior specialization as it offers an incredible amount of damage and can heal itself. The only downside is that this specialization can be a bit weak against a large number of enemies if they don't have any support from their team as they can quickly be overrun with damage while their low health to deal extra damage.

The Top Three Specializations

So after picking apart all of the nine different specializations available in Dragon Age Inquisition, there are three options that sit at the top. Knight-Enchanter for Mage, Assassin for Rogue, and Reaver for Warrior. Each of these offers the most damage versus protection to make them substantial in a fight and able to solo a playthrough. While these are the best options for any player, they still may not be the best for certain playstyles. As secondary options, the Necromancer for Mage, Tempest for Rogue, and Templar for Warrior make great choices.
