A famously ugly game, Dwarf Fortress, to get a massive facelift in December

Build your mountainous empire.

In a new trailer, Dwarf Fortress, a game originally released by Bay 12 Games in 2006, was revealed to receive a graphic overhaul and Steam release on December 6, 2022. The game featured very primitive graphics and very involved (and punishing) simulation gameplay when first released. Bay 12 Games partnered with Kitfox Games in 2019 and has been working on the overhaul since.

Fans have more than just a visual revamp of Dwarf Fortress to look forward to. There will also be mouse functionality, a soundtrack, ambient sounds, a new tutorial, and an encyclopedia meant to help new players craft their dwarven homes more efficiently. There will also be animal people added into the game that can either be friends or foes. What will not be present initially upon release is an Adventure mode or Steam achievements, though in a developer's post on Steam, these features are noted to be something that the team intends to release eventually.

The original game remains free to download. The overhauled Steam version will cost $30 on release.
