What Commanders should I pick in Expeditions: Rome?

Choose a leader.

While players can choose strategies in Expeditions: Rome, Commanders (Centurions) are needed on the field to execute them. The choice of which commanders to pick and why can be difficult, but some commanders are definitely better than others.

First and foremost, you should never choose a less than Indifferent Commander. Avoid Disgruntled or even a Hesitant Commander at all costs. Choose any of the Pleased Commanders, preferably Infantry for the first one.

Every character, no matter how small, reacts to your actions. If they already dislike the way you behave this early on, they will only grow to hate you more over time and that can result in revolt.

The game advises picking until you have all four specializations, but you shouldn't do that. All you really need is one commander at first. You don't need to worry about the cost, as even the most expensive commanders are still incredibly cheap.

There are multiple different specializations:

  • Artillery - Does better with attacks and defenses that benefit Artillery.
  • Calvary - Does better with attacks and defenses that benefit Calvary.
  • Infantry - Does better with attacks and defenses that benefit Infantry.
  • Logistics - Does better with attacks and defenses that benefit Logistics.

Some commanders are better suited to some situations than others, but it depends on the particular situation. The cards in battle will show how risky something is, so consider them more than your specialization.
