Final Fantasy XIV has amassed a collection of essential characters since the story's beginning that began with A Realm Reborn. One of the recurring characters in the hierarchy of deities is Zodiark. This powerful being has made multiple appearances in the story and remains an integral piece of the story in Endwalker, but who is this character?
Be warned: this article contains spoilers for both Shadowbringers and Endwalker below. Read at your own risk.
Zodiark is one of the gods of the Final Fantasy XIV world and the opposite of Hydaelyn. Zodiark represents Darkness, while Hydaelyn represents Light. In Final Fantasy XIV, these two entities are the equivalent of the world's gods.
Emet-Selch revealed in the Shadowbringers campaign that both Zodiark and Hydaelyn are Primals, magical beings born of devout worship from vehement followers. In the Final Days, the Ascians joined together to summon Zodiark to avert their impending doom, and his summoning did avoid the coming crisis for a time. However, the peace was only temporary as dissenting Ascians summoned Hydaelyn to shackle Zodiark.
Hydaelyn and Zodiark fought until the world of the Ascians tore ripped apart in an event known as The Sundering. The Sundering fractured existence, splitting the world into fourteen distinct fragments. The surviving Ascians, with their souls intact, known as the Unsundered, fought to reunite the world, and in doing so, enacted the Seven Umbral Calamities. Each event brought unparalleled death and destruction but brought the world one step closer to reuniting.
Hydaelyn and Zodiark remain critical pieces in the struggle of Eorzea. While we won't spoil their involvement in the latest expansion, the Warrior of Light will undoubtedly hear mention of them again.
