Genshin Impact may force you to rename your Wanderer

It's a sad day for all Wanderers named Chiori.

A flurry of tweets by Japanese player @cmr_sub recently went viral for showcasing an unfortunate message they received upon logging into Genshin Impact's Version 3.7 update. While in Japanese, the message roughly states that their Wanderer's name had been reset and that the player's account would be suspended if they were to try to use the name again. Attached in the mail is An Appellative Stroke, an item that can be used to change Wanderer's name.

One of Genshin Impact's most long-awaited characters, Scaramouche, was released as a playable character named Wanderer in Version 3.3, which took place at the end of 2022. As part of his redemption arc, players are given the opportunity to rename him into anything they want, with two main conditions: the name must follow community guidelines and it must not share the same name as a playable character.

The Japanese player's Wanderer was named Chiori, a name they had carefully chosen and eventually became attached to after contemplating the character's story. However, Version 3.7 introduced a new character named Kirara, who notably has a voice line about someone also named Chiori. Voice lines pertaining to another character are only applicable if the character in question is or would be playable. The existence of a voice line about Chiori indicates that Genshin Impact may release a playable unit with the same name in the future.

As Wanderer can't share the same name as another playable character, Genshin Impact had taken rather drastic measures by resetting all Wanderers named Chiori, alongside sending a shocking message with a threat of account suspension. The game normally prevents players from naming Wanderer anything invalid, but a lot of characters are still in development. If your Wanderer coincidentally shares the same name as an upcoming unit, it's likely that your account will receive the same treatment. HoYoverse has not released a statement regarding the matter.
