Santa Monica Studio released the impetus of the entire series for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. God of War introduces us to our hero, Kratos, an ex-Spartan warrior who seeks vengeance on Ares for tricking him into murdering his family. This is the first game where you will find yourself up against the Greek pantheon.

God Of War II (2007)

2007 saw the release of God of War's sequel on the PlayStation 2. This continues the Greek saga as Kratos has become the new God of War. Things aren't exactly copacetic, though. The other gods of Olympus find Kratos's methods far too brutal, and as a result, Zeus sends him on a one-way trip to the underworld. Rescued by the titan Gaia, Kratos begins a new journey to fight against the fates, trying to alter his. Something no mortal—or God has ever changed.

If you like prequels, have we got the game for you. Chains of Olympus is one of three prequel games in the series and was released on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2008. Set before Kratos learned of Ares' betrayal, this game presents a world where the gods have been rendered powerless. Here Kratos is tasked with restoring Olympus as penance for killing his family. Throughout Chains of Olympus, Kratos faces off against some of the most dangerous creatures of Greek mythology and is brought to the impossible question: Redeem himself, or save the world?

God of War III (2010)

The first of the Greek saga to be released on the PlayStation 3. The 2010 title is the epic conclusion of Kratos's warpath as he seeks to put an end to the gods of Olympus. With specific regard to Zeus.

Before we move on, it is worth noting that all of the PSP titles and the first two games of the Greek saga have been re-released and remastered on the PlayStation 3. With God of War 3 being remastered for the PlayStation 4.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010)

Ghost of Sparta shared the 2010 release slate with God of War III. This PSP title is the second prequel game. However, it takes place between God of War and God of War II. Chains of Olympus reveals more about our hero Kratos's past, as he works to claim the throne of Ares and become the new God of War.

God of War: Ascension (2013)

The final prequel game! This one is set 10 years before the events of God of War. This 2013 release shows Kratos as a mortal. A soldier who had pledged fealty and devotion to Ares. This devotion was tested when Ares manipulated Kratos into murdering his family. Kratos swears vengeance and breaks his oath to Ares. As punishment, Kratos is sentenced to live out his days in prison for the living damned (which serves as Ascension's setting), where the furies subject him to endless torture. Kratos's goal? To escape and avenge his family.

God of War (2018)

The first in the Norse saga and the first original God of War game to be released on PlayStation 4! God of War (2018) sees an old and battered Kratos, who has rejected his murderous ways for a simple life in the Norse country, fathering a young boy named Atreus. The game opens with the father and son gathering wood for a funeral pyre. Atreus's mother has died, and her final wish was for Kratos and Atreus to take her ashes and scatter them from the highest mountain in the realms. Through their quest, they meet a variety of friends and foes from the Norse Pantheon and explore the vast mythology of Norway.

Now that you know the basis of the games leading up to God of War: Ragnarok, why not learn a little bit about the forthcoming game itself? Like how old is Atreus in the upcoming release or is Ragnarok the finale of the series? on Pro Game Guides.
