In Gotham Knights, the player will have access to all of Gotham City, but how big is that city really? Creative director Patrick Redding and producer Fleur Marty met with IGN in August 2020 and revealed details on the city itself.
According to Marty, Gotham City will have five boroughs spread across several islands, connected by bridges. It sounds a lot like Arkham Knight's map, which had a few boroughs separated by three islands. Gotham Knights sounds a lot bigger than Arkham Knight, so we should expect to spend a lot more time in Gotham Knights exploring the city.
Will Gotham Knights have a living city?
A living city in video games means people are walking around and interacting with the world in a way that feels realistic. The Arkham games found ways to keep people off the streets, but Gotham Knights won't. Marty and Redding said there would be regular citizens on the streets.
Since you're patrolling only at night, there will be no crowds, but it won't feel empty. Players' actions and interactions with the world will determine how citizens react to the character. Redding said an entire "ecosystem" depends on how you deal with criminals and the heavy-handed police.
Regular patrols in between solving the mystery of Batman's death will make citizens more inclined to view characters favorably.
