When New World launched in late September 2021, it was heralded as the next great advancement in MMOs. Published by Amazon Games, with such a big-name developer behind it, it was expected to be a huge hit. But what are the current player numbers like for New World?
As of the start of November, New World’s player count usually peaks at around 400,000 concurrent users on Steam a day, as per the website Steam Charts. This figure does not include players that don’t use the Steam client. New World can also be played by purchasing it directly from Amazon, and the client runs without Steam.
These non-Steam player numbers are not publicly accessible, but estimates put the total number of all active players at around 450,000. This is a huge fall from the peak of over one million players during the start of October.
The game has seemingly hemorrhaged players due to a number of failings—promised server transfers being delayed, lack of cross regional transfers, and bugs that break the game—taking weeks to fix.

However, Amazon Games remains committed to developing the game going forward. The most recent patch on Oct 27 fixed a host of bugs, and server transfers were finally implemented.
Additionally the new Outpost Rush mode has sparked a revival in the remaining playerbase. A solid playerbase of around 450,000 players is nothing to turn your nose up at. It still leaves the game in the top-five most-played games on Steam, and one of the most-played MMOs in the world right now.
