Pokémon GO Mateo not showing up – Fixes

Since his introduction, Mateo has been a big help to many players on Pokémon GO. That makes it all the more frustrating when you walk through a whole route just for him not to show up.

How to fix Mateo not showing up in Pokémon GO

Whenever you complete a route in Pokémon GO, Mateo should be at the end waiting for a gift exchange. It appears, however, that there is an issue where he won't appear if the route ends at a Gym. This issue hasn't been patched out, but there is an easy workaround. Here is what you should do:

1. Start the route
2. Get to the Gym at the end
3. Spin the Gym
4. This should prompt Mateo's dialogue to pop up

There have also been reports that just restarting the app at the end of the route will also cause Mateo to pop up.

Who is Mateo in Pokémon GO?

Mateo is a new NPC introduced in the Along the Routes event. His appearance is similar to the Mountaineers in the main series games. Mateo also has a trusty Foongus that rests on his shoulder. Trainers can exchange gifts with him at the end of Routes in Pokémon GO. Due to his international status, players can even get items from other countries by talking to Mateo. There is only a chance that he will appear at the end of any given route, though, so it isn't guaranteed.
