How to get past the Guards in Sea of Thieves

I just want to see Guybrush.

There are various puzzles and challenges included in the Monkey Island Sea of Thieves update, but one that particularly stumped me was the skeleton guards. These figures blocked not only the path to the Governor's Mansion but also spots in town. This left me wondering if I needed to defeat them, sneak past them, or insult them into submission.

To reach the Governor's Mansion and save Guybrush, you must get past the skeletal guard. This is no easy task and requires multiple steps. Fortunately, doing this will complete several commendations along the way.

How to get past the Skeleton Guards on Mêlée Island

First, you'll need to get the Chef's Uniform, as you need this to defeat the skeletal guard on break behind the Church. Purchase this from the General Store and cook up the stew to get the meat. Take the meat to the alley behind the Church and feed it to Piranha Poodles. They will attack the guard and leave a skeletal corpse behind.

Now, you can start constructing a replacement guard. Ultimately, you need Murray from the Scum Bar, the bone Spiffy the Dog is holding, the bone inside the Clock Tower, which requires getting the Clock Tower key, and the bone inside the Mêlée Island Jail cell.

You must purchase the monkey doll from the Citizen of Mêlée Island to get the bone from Spiffy. Trade this for the bone, then take it to the alley and attach it to the body. Next, steal the Clock Tower key from the Thirsty Pirate and remove the bone blocking the clock mechanism. Don't forget to set the clock to midnight as well.

Finally, take the Gunpowder Gummies from the bench where the guard on break was sitting. Buy the gunpowder fuses from the General Store as well. Head to the jail, then stick the Gunpowder Gummies into the locks of the cells. Attach the fuses and then light them with your lantern.

This will open both cells, freeing Otis. Otis will leave behind Captain Coco, but for now, grab the bone from the adjoining cell. Attach this to the skeletal body and return to the jail. Pick up Captain Coco and go to the Scum Bar. Swap the coconut for Murray. You can head to the body to complete your guard by attaching Murray to it, but I recommend taking Murray to the key locations around the island to get the Guided Tour commendation.

That said, once you have attached Murray's head to the body, he will reanimate it. Murray will make his way to the guard blocking the path to the Mansion and take his place, allowing you to enter. Head up the Mansion and speak to Guybrush. Grab Elaine's Note and the Key from under Guybrush's bedsheets, open the chest, and grab a bottle of root beer.

Captain LeChuck will make an appearance, along with an army of skeletons. Defeat these using the root beer, and you will notice that the guards have disappeared from the town. All that's left is to finish any remaining commendations and complete The Journey to Mêlée Island.
