How does the campaign in Total War: Warhammer 3 work?

How exactly does Realm of Chaos work anyway?

The base campaign in Total War: Warhammer 3 is Realm of Chaos, and is quite unique compared to previous games. A far more narratively driven campaign than in Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Warhammer 2, the campaign in Total War: Warhammer 3 has you attempt to free the Kislev Bear god, Ursun, from his imprisonment.

Each faction has different reasons to do this, but the method is the same. Below we’ll break down a generic campaign overview, and how things work.

The First 30 Turns

At the start of the game, you’ll usually have some prime targets for early expansions. These will either be pointed out by your advisor or so obvious you can’t miss it. You’ll want to focus on getting as many neighbors either pacified, confederated, or otherwise removed.

This is your time to grab as much land as possible and build up. You need to make strong alliances and prepare for what’s coming next, as once the Realms of Chaos open up, you’re going to have a lot on your plate.

Entering the Realms of Chaos

Once the Realms of Chaos open, Rifts will appear all across the map. You can use these to enter one of the four Realms of Chaos and attempt to steal a Daemon Prince soul. You’ll need the majority of the Daemon Prince souls to complete the campaign so this should be a priority.

This is usually achieved by sending your Faction leader into the Realm of Chaos while your other forces stop Chaos incursions across the map. Have a quick mobile force to head around Rifts and make sure to Garrison your Settlements.

Also keep an eye on what other Factions are doing in the Realms of Chaos. You can’t let your opponents get a hold of more Daemon Prince Souls than you, or you’ll face defeat. Once all the Souls have been collected.

The final step is a grand final battle at the point of Ursun’s imprisonment. This is no easy task, and you’ll most likely be getting harassed from all sides at this point. Luckily you can usually make a last-ditch push towards the objective with your main forces.

With any luck, you’ll be able to take on the extremely difficult final battle and claim victory. One way to take advantage of the enemy is to use Missile troops. Since so many of the enemies in the final battle are Daemonic, it’s best to try and take them on with the greatly buffed Missile troops of Total War: Warhammer 3. Good luck with your campaign!
