Tears of Themis announces return of Japanese dubs for Main Stories

It's a small win for JP dub enjoyers!

After months and multiple Episodes of adjusting to Chinese and Korean voiceovers, fans of Tears of Themis' impeccable Japanese dubs can finally rest easy. Developer HoYoverse took to the game's official social media channels to announce that Japanese dubs for Main Stories are making a comeback, with plans to begin releasing missing voiceovers from Episode 8 onwards. This change will begin taking effect once recording has completed in May 2023.

Tears of Themis was originally launched in China and catered to Simplified Chinese dubs. Their global release expanded their roster of voiceover languages, supporting Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dubs. The game's Japanese cast is notoriously comprised of A-list voice actors, with the likes of Yuki Kaji (Luke), Junichi Suwabe (Artem), Jun Fukuyama (Vyn), and Kaito Ishikawa (Marius).

In October 2022, HoYoverse made the difficult decision to remove Japanese voiceovers from free content due to conflicting work schedules and workplace safety concerns likely propagated by COVID-19. However, players were quick to see these reasons as cover-ups for the possibly high cost of maintaining popular voice actors in a small game.

Being a story-based otome game, Tears of Themis relies heavily on voiceovers to maintain player engagement. The lack of Japanese dubs turned away players who couldn't get used to hearing their favorite male leads speak with a different voice. As a result, the developer's latest U-turn to bring back Main Story dubs has been a pleasant surprise that will likely reinvigorate player interest.

Only Main Stories and card content will have Japanese dubs. Event Stories, Personal Stories, Sweet Chapters, and similar free content will continue to be released without beloved voices, but this change is at least a small relief to players excited to see the NXX Investigation Team in action.
