One of the most difficult decisions players have to make in their Genshin Impact journey is to pick out a name for Wanderer, who turns over a new leaf in the Interlude Chapter: Act III - Inversion of Genesis. This has resulted in some of the most meme-worthy names for everyone's beloved ex-Fatui member. HoYoverse even jumped in on the fun by giving him the nickname "Hat Guy" during the A Parade of Providence event. However, naming Wanderer isn't as easy as it sounds.
Until recently, players were banned from giving Wanderer the same name as any playable character—including those who have yet to be released. This prompted the community to use Wanderer's naming system to predict which characters were coming into the game. But players won't be able to anymore, as a Version 3.7 hotfix now allows players to give Wanderer names of upcoming characters.

There's a catch—once the playable character is released, Wanderer's name will be reset, and players will be compensated with An Appellative Stroke, an item that can be used to change his name one more time. The announcement came in response to an incident where a Japanese player received a ban warning for using the name Chiori, which was revealed to be an upcoming playable character through Kirara's voice lines. They had named Wanderer when his Interlude quest was first released and only received the warning when Kirara came out in Version 3.7.
Unlike others, the Japanese player had put a lot of thought into their Wanderer's name and named him during his birthday, thus growing attached to "Chiori." Players who have similarly built a bond with Wanderer must know that Genshin Impact could still force you to change his name in the future if the name were to be used by a new playable character.
