Now that the Minecraft 1.16 update has had time to settle in, it looks like players are starting to wonder what is on the horizon in the 1.17 patch! Big changes to things like caves to mountains and all sorts of ideas are being thrown around as ideas. However, nothing is currently concrete yet, and officially there has been no inkling on where Mojang will decide to turn their focus to next. That doesn't mean we can't speculate though! So, we'll take you through what is currently known about the next Minecraft update and when you can expect additional information.
Minecraft Live has just started, we'll be keeping track of any information for the 1.17 patch!
Minecraft 1.17 Release Date
The release date for the Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update is scheduled to be launched in Summer 2021! This was announced at the Minecraft Live 2020 event that took place on October 3rd, 2020. We hope they are able to stay on track to get this update out in the summer. You will likely be able to try out some of this new stuff ahead of time with the many snapshots that Mojang releases ahead of the full launch.
Minecraft Caves and Cliffs Update Announced
It looks like caves and cliffs are going to be what is going to be the focus in the 1.17 update!
New Mob: Axolotl
These are a new mob that appear to spawn in the Lush Cave biome, and you can capture them in a bucket of water! You could potentially bring them back to your base and add them to an aquarium. You can also bring them with you as your own little army. They will attack other mobs in the water, particularly Guardians that spawn in ocean monuments.
New System: Archaeology
A whole new mechanic called Archaeology is to be added to the game. It looks like you'll find excavation sites around the world, and you can use a new tool called the brush to dust away the dirt and find different pieces of pottery and other things. You will then be able to take these pieces and create clay pots via the art that is exposed from the dig sites!
New Item: Bundle
If you're constantly finding your inventory full, then this is going to be a very helpful addition to the game for you. You can create a bag that you can place items into, that will conserve space in your inventory.
New Item: Lightning Rod
If you are a fan of using a roof that might be a bit flammable, then creating a Lightning Rod will be a way to prevent this from happening. You can place that on your roof, and the lightning will hit it instead of igniting your flimsy roof.
If you're wondering what you will be able to find in the new caves update, well then one of them is Amethyst Geodes. These are going to be a rare find, but when you do they will light up the cave in a purple glow. These geodes can only grow as apart of the special amethyst block, which you can't move from where it spawned. So, you will need to keep track of the location you find them in to collect the geodes.
You can use the geodes to create the soon to be added Telescope!
The Telescope will require another new resource which is copper! This can be found by mining, and can create different blocks, which can of course set off some great looking builds by using it in different ways. As your world ages, copper that has been placed will slowly turn green, just like copper in real life will do!
New mountain generation will be coming via the cliffs portion of the update. These are going to be a lot snowier, and there will even be a new powdered snow block. This new block will be kind of like a trap, because if you or a mob walk onto it, you will fall through it!
New Animal: Goats
On those new mountains, you will find the new Goats spawning on them! You will have to be careful though, because if you mess with them, they might just knock you off the mountain by charging at you!
New Mob: Warden
This new mob will occur in the Deep Dark Biome, and is the first blind mob that has been added to the game. The Warden is attracted by sound, so you can technically fool it by throwing snowballs and making noise away from yourself. It is very similar to the Sculk Sensors that are going to be part of this new biome.
New Deep Dark Biome
This is going to be a new biome that exists at the deepest parts of the world. In this biome, you will encounter Sculk Growths. There will be a new block called the Sculk Sensor, and this will detect if a block is placed, footsteps, and a whole lot more are sensed and emit a redstone signal. If you place a wool block next to the sensor, it will make it so the detection isn't felt by it and will not trigger. This sensor can also create a wireless redstone sensor, if it is trigger it will emit the signal and can send it to another Sculk Sensor wirelessly!
Improved Cave Generation
Caves have had how they generate greatly improved. You will find underground lakes that you can swim through to get to wide open areas. There will also be naturally generated waterfalls that will spawn throughout these newly created caves. It was even suggested that you could go cave rafting if you wanted!
Here's a look at how some of the caves will generate. It's important to note that ores will not glow when this goes live, it is just shown to light up the cave so you can see things in it.
The Dripstone Caves will be a new biome that you will come across while exploring these newly generated caves. You will get the stalagmites and stalactites that players have been wanting to see, which can be knocked from the top of the cave and will drop down and break. If they are on the ground, they will deal damage to you if you or an enemy drops into them!
One new biome that you can expect to see is called Lush Caves. This includes a bunch of vegetation and hanging vines. You will certainly get the feel that you are within a cave that the plants have taken over. There's going to be a new Azealia tree that shows up in the overworld, this will signify to the player that there is a Lush Cave biome if you look below where the tree is located!
Here's a deeper look of all the vines and plant life, including some pooling water that you will see in this biome.
If you notice the glowing gold berries on the vine, these are called Glow Berries. You can harvest these and eat them if you'd like.
There's going to be some interesting new plants added in this update, and one of those is the Drip Leaf Plant. They can grow from water, and will vary in height. If you notice there is a flat top to them which you can platform onto. If you stand on it for too long, it will start to tilt downwards, which will eventually make you fall through. This will be a pretty amazing for people who like to make maps!
Included at the Minecraft Live Event is the Mob Vote! This is going to put three different mobs up against each other, where you and other Minecraft players can vote for which one they prefer. The new additions have been announced, and are the Glow Squid, Icelogoer, and the Moobloom. Each one resides in a different biome, with the Glow Squid appearing in deep ocean, Icelogoer in the high mountains, and the Moobloom occupying the flower forest.
The mob that ends up getting chosen, will likely be apart of the 1.17 update, so you can look forward to that when it arrives!
When do we get official word on the update?
It looks like we're going to get more details on what is going be coming down the pipe in Minecraft at the Minecraft Live Event/Minecon this year. The event will be taking place on October 3rd, 2020 so we will have to wait until then to find out what exactly Mojang has planned for the next content updates for the game.
I have seen many questions on if there will be a Minecraft Live event/Minecon this year - and I'm super happy to say there indeed will be a broadcast! And we will for sure show some exciting new things then ;). More info will come next month - so stay tuned for that!

According to the trailer for the event, it looks like we can expect "huge updates" as well as getting the ability to choose the next mob that will be added to the game. You can watch the trailer for the event below.
What will be in Minecraft 1.17?
There's a lot of speculation out there about the 1.17 Minecraft update, but unfortunately there's no concrete information about anything. There hasn't been any credible leaks, and everyone who works on the game has been keeping their mouths shut about it. October is on the way, as of this writing, so we can expect some details soon. Here's a look at some of the suggestions that players have had.
A lot of the speculation for this patch seems to stem around a cave update. This has not been confirmed and there's no information that backs up the fact that this will be what Mojang works on next. A lot of players see caves as a fairly boring area that could easily be improved. You could change up how they form, make them far more mysterious and fun to explore, and even add some new ores and mobs to them. If you've played any Minecraft in the past, you will know that you spend quite a bit of time down in the depths looking for Diamond and other valuable resources. Making these areas more scenic and rewarding to adventure into would be a welcome addition to the game.
Another commonly talked about addition to Minecraft would be changing up the mountains. While there are mountainous biomes, they do tend to be fairly boring and plain when you take the time to climb them. Players might want to feel more rewarded when they are taking on the task of scaling a giant mountain. You could add birds, nests, animals, and more to the area. Maybe even some mountain trolls could be fun?
The End Update
The Nether got brand new biomes, mobs, and new resources that leaves The End a bit on the blander side now. This is a difficult place to get to, but after you take out the Ender Dragon, there could be a whole lot more to do here. There could be additional biomes, and pretty similar additions to what The Nether got. You would pretty much be looking at adding more reason to explore The End than there is now.
While all of these suggestions are merely speculation, we shouldn't have to wait for too long to see what we will be getting in the next major update to Minecraft. The sky is the limit when it comes to this game, so hopefully Mojang will pull out all of the stop and bring some great new content in the next update!
