What are Return Pillars in Shin Megami Tensei V

One-way tickets out of trouble.

Shin Megami Tensei V is the latest Japanese Role Playing Game from Atlus. Like many other Atlus titles, Shin Megami Tensei V offers a substantial challenge for players throughout the game. When players fall in battle, they’ll have to return to their last save point, which could set them back an hour or more. Thankfully the game has resources to help players avoid defeat, like Return Pillars.

Return Pillars are consumable items that players can use to teleport back to the last Leyline Fount they visited automatically. Return Pillars are first introduced after the game’s first boss fight and are a vital resource that players can use to retreat if overwhelmed.

Like all other consumables in Shin Megami Tensei, players can only carry a limited amount of Return Pillars, so make sure to use these items only when necessary.

Because death resets players back to their last save, we recommend using the Return Pillar after prolonged periods of exploration with a weakened party. If you’ve got the strength for a few more fights, try not to use a Return Pillar, as it could be your ticket out of a guaranteed defeat.

Shin Megami Tensei V is available now for Nintendo Switch.
