Starfield Alien DNA Trait – Perks, Weaknesses, & How to Remove It

Feeling a little too alien today?

As Starfield is set in outer space, it's only fitting that your character can be a little bit alien. If you're looking for the best starter traits and backgrounds, the Alien DNA trait is definitely one you will want to try. The trait allows your character to have certain buffs due to a failed experiment they went through in the past. However, it can also come with some negative side effects as well, which is why removing it is always an option. Here are all the details you need to know about these extraterrestrial genes!

Is Alien DNA worth it in Starfield?

Alien DNA can seem like one of the very best traits for your character because it increases your total health and oxygen levels at the start of the game. This means you can take more damage during combat and sprint for a longer stretch of time without receiving any CO2. These are great boosts to have for any situation; however, the HP boost is only about 50 points higher than a character without the trait, and you will already gain 20 health points per level up, making it less effective the more you progress.

The other negative effect of the trait is that aid items and food will not heal you as effectively. While Med Packs usually heal you for up to four points of health per second, they slightly decrease to around 3 points per second. This means you'll probably have to end up using more of them to refill your health bar. This won't have much impact at the start of the game but might become more noticeable as you progress and face more difficult enemies.

I would suggest using the Alien DNA to start off your game with, and then potentially removing it or putting some points into the Medical and Wellness skill trees to make it more worth it later on.

How to remove Alien DNA in Starfield

If you no longer want to have alien DNA, you can get rid of it by heading to any medical professional around the Settled Systems. I headed to the Reliant Medical office in New Atlantis and was able to initiate a conversation with the head doctor to remove it. However, it will cost you 10,000 Credits to have the procedure done, so be sure it's what you really want.

There are pros and cons to almost every trait you can choose in Starfield, which is why it's a good idea to weigh your options carefully when creating a character. Thankfully, you can always get rid of a trait if you don't want it later on.

Can you get a new Trait after removing the Alien DNA Trait in Starfield?

The answer is no. After removing it, you cannot select a new trait to replace the Alien DNA trait in Starfield. You'll only have the other two traits you selected when creating your character. I recommend considering whether or not you want to remove the trait before doing so, but the choice is yours.
