Once you get one of the items listed above crafted, you will need to place it down near your workbench for it to upgrade by one level. After that, depending on how many items of the three crafting items you make, you will upgrade it by one rank to a max rank of five.

Along with this, with every upgrade you add to the bench, you will be able to upgrade your weapons, armor, and tools to that level; it will also unlock a few recipes with each upgrade.

You will also need to use a hammer and craft each one in the same way as your workbench; by right-clicking the hammer while it is selected in the hotbar to open up the build menu and selecting the crafting tab. After this, find and craft the item you want to make, as a side note if you haven't already you can craft a hammer with three wood and two stone.
