How do Fronts work in Victoria 3 warfare?

War is really unfair if you think about it, man.

If you are wondering how exactly fronts work in Victoria 3, it's pretty simple. In short, instead of moving large armies across the map and watching them fight during war, fonts replace them. Because of this, fronts are how battles are decided in Victoria 3, and learning how they work is vital for survival. That said, fronts appear when two nations begin the initial stages leading up to open warfare

During this build-up to war, both nations will usually start mobilizing their forces by calling up generals and conscripts. After mobilization, players must decide if they want to defend their frontlines or advance them into enemy territory. Both options are great, depending on the situation. If you want to slowly drain a larger nation's resources and fight a defensive war, putting a general on defending a front might be a good idea. However, advancing your front is the way to go if you want to win new territory and regions.

Once fronts are created, the conflict will slowly begin between two sides, similar to how it exists in most paradox RTS games. In short, a box with two factions will appear with numbers to indicate total troop strength. As a frontline battle occurs, the strongest and most well-equipped General/battalion will come out on top. When this happens, the general who won that is advancing the front will move it deeper into a nation's lands, starting another front battle. However, if a defending general wins, the front will remain in the control of the defending faction.
