How to Remove Keycaps | How to Take Off Your Keyboard’s Keycaps

To pull or not to pull, that is the question.

Whether you have damaged keycaps or want to customize your appearance, you will need to remove your keyboard's keycaps. To do this, you will want to purchase a keycap puller. This accessory will wrap around a keycap and pull it up safely without damaging the cap or the switches underneath.

The first thing you want to do is make sure that your keyboard's keycaps can be removed in the first place. Sometimes a manufacturer will even have specific keycaps for their product. The second thing you want to do is make sure that everything is powered off.

You can use either a plastic or wire keycap puller to remove your keyboard's keycaps. Simply place the puller underneath the keycap and pull up. If there is a lot of resistance, pull gently and make sure nothing is caught or stuck to the keycap. Once you have pulled the keycap off, remove it from the puller and set it aside if you plan to reuse it.

Pulling off your keycaps is a great way to clean them and your keyboard. Replacing them with custom keypads is also a fun project if you want more personality on your keyboard. As mentioned above, you will want to make sure the keyboard is powered off or unplugged. This allows you to avoid getting shocked or blinded by RGB-capable keyboards.
