Genshin Impact uses chess pieces as common motifs, and you'll find one instance of this while exploring the giant chessboard in Safhe Shatranj. The missing pieces in the area can be filled with Chess Pieces modeled after key locations in Sumeru's desert region. Collecting all five can be used to unlock a World Quest called Apocalypse Lost, as well as a giant chessboard puzzle.
All of these Chess Pieces can be collected from Exquisite Chests while completing The Dirge of Bilqis quest chain and the follow-up quest series called Tadhla the Falcon. Check your inventory as you may already have them.
All 5 Chess Piece locations in the Sumeru Desert – Genshin Impact
King Deshret's Pillar
You must complete The Temple Where Sand Flows Like Tears to have access to this Chess Piece, which is located in Liloupar's Cell. To get there, start from the chess board in Safhe Shatranj and head north to find a triangle-shaped passage. Enter and follow the path forward until you reach the edge of a cliff.
From the cliff's edge, glide toward the tunnel on the left. This will take you directly to Liloupar's Cell.
You'll find an Exquisite Chest at the foot of the tree. Loot it to get the Chess Piece called King Deshret's Pillar.

Border Fort
You must complete Dune-Entombed Fecundity: Part I to have access to this Chess Piece, located in the underground area on the outskirts of Mt. Damavand. Start at the underground Teleport Waypoint near Qusayr Al-Inkhida', pictured above. As soon as you enter the area, look ahead to find an entrance leading indoors—enter the ruin to proceed.
Once you've entered the ruin, follow the path forward and enter the cave behind the obelisk. Glide downward and turn right to enter another area.
You'll spot an Exquisite Chest beside the mechanism. Loot it to get the Chess Piece called Border Fort.

Enter the pathway to immediately spot the Exquisite Chest waiting for you. Loot it to get the Chess Piece called Soulferry.
Khaj-Nisut
You must complete the Dune-Entombed Fecundity: Part III to have access to this Chess Piece. Head to the underground Teleport Waypoint west of the Wounded Shin Valley. Use the Four-Leaf Sigils to travel to the other side of the terrain, where you'll find a large entrance leading to an indoor ruin.
Once inside, you'll immediately spot the Exquisite Chest at the center of the clearing. Loot it to get the Chess Piece called Khaj-Nisut.
Temple of Gurabad
After completing the entire The Dirge of Bilqis quest chain, wait one real-time day or until the server reset to unlock a new quest series, starting with Tadhla the Falcon. Completing it will unlock the next quest called "The Falcon's Hunt."
Follow the World Quest until the part where you obtain Liloupar's fragment, then loot the Exquisite Chest nearby before reporting back to Masseira. This will reward you with the Chess Piece called Temple of Gurabad. If you missed looting the Chest, click the link above to find a full walkthrough of its exact location.
