Who is Kabukimono in Genshin Impact?

Kabukimono is a name that players may be familiar with due to the segment in the Archon Quest Interlude Chapter: Act III - Inversion of Genesis called The Kabukimono's Finale. This Interlude is highly regarded as Scaramouche's unofficial Story Quest, as it explores his past and paves a path for his renewed identity. But what does Kabukimono actually refer to?

How is Kabukimono related to Scaramouche in Genshin Impact?

Kabukimono was Scaramouche's first name and is one of the many names that he picked up over the years. When Ei first created a puppet to hold the Gnosis, she noticed that it shed tears through the night. Not wanting for a fragile being to be burdened by the weight of divine power, she sealed its powers away and abandoned it in Shakkei Pavilion. The puppet, who we better know as Scaramouche, remained unnamed.

Around the same time, a person named Katsuragi, who worked under the bladesmith Niwa, discovered the Shakkei Pavilion. He began exploring the Domain, only to find the lone puppet. He brought the puppet back home to Tatarasuna, where the people began to call it Kabukimono. Eventually, he came to experience many tragedies perpetuated by Dottore. When Kabukimono eventually joined the Fatui Harbingers, he became known as Kunikuzushi, code name Scaramouche.

What does Kabukimono mean?

Kabukimono was a term used to describe violent, wandering gangs of samurai in Japan's Feudal Era. The word can be directly translated to "strange things," as is believed to be the origin of kabuki, a style of Japanese theater that focuses on a heavily stylized performance. Scaramouche's second name, Kunkuzushi, is based on a character in kabuki, so there's an impression of evolution in his identity shift.
