Upgrading forges is costly business

Once you build your first forge in Valheim, that is not the end of it, as you will need to upgrade to unlock more and more items in the game; here's everything you will need to do to upgrade your forge.

How to upgrade the forge in Valheim

To upgrade your forge in Valheim, you will need to build the following crafting items next to it.

  • Forge Cooler
  • Anvils
  • Forge Bellows
  • Forge Toolrack
  • Grinding Wheel

Building one of the crafting items listed above will upgrade the forge by one rank and unlock many crafting recipes; That said, here all of the resources you need and what you need to get to unlock and craft all forge upgrades.

How to craft a Forge Cooler in Valheim

You will need to craft a forge cooler like all forge upgrades by right-clicking a hammer and then accessing the crafting tab. You will also need to get both copper and finewood to unlock crafting the forge cooler; once you get both, you can then craft the cooler with 25 finewood and ten copper.

How to craft a Forge Bellows in Valheim

Once you get iron and craft or find a chain, you will be able to craft forge bellows. You will also need to place it near a workbench like with all forge upgrades. That said, here's everything the forge bellows requires listed below.

  • Five Deerhide
  • Five Wood
  • Four Chains: You can get chains from either wraiths or sunken crypts that require a swamp key to open,

How to craft a Forge Toolrack in Valheim

You can craft a forge toolrack after you get iron; once you unlock the recipe, here's everything the upgrade requires listed below.

How to craft a Anvils in Valheim

You can make an anvil after you get bronze bars; after you get bronze, you can make anvils with the resources listed below.

How to craft a Smith's Anvil in Valheim

You can make a smith's anvil after you unlock it by getting iron bars; Once you get all of that, you can make the smith's anvil with the resources listed below.

  • 20 Iron
  • Five Wood

How to build a Grinding Wheel  in Valheim

You can make a grinding wheel after getting iron and building a stone cutter; after this, you can craft a grinding stone with 25 wood and one sharpening stone that you can make in the stonecutter. 

Once you get all six upgrades built, you will be able to craft a ton of new recipes like iron pickaxes, armor, the ancient spear, and the hunter's bow. However, most recipes will require iron or bronze bars, and to get those, you will need to gather the ore and melt them down in a smelter.
