What does your Patronus mean? Wizarding World (Pottermore)

Shout Expecto Patronum with feeling.

There are many spells and incantations in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but few have had the effect that Expecto Patronum has had. This spell captured the hearts of Harry Potter fans and lasted throughout the books and films as one of the most iconic. But you may be wondering what Expecto Patronum does and what a Patronus is.

All Patronus in Harry Potter and what they mean

The Patronus is a form of advanced magic, first seen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where Professor Lupin taught Harry Potter the spell. It is primarily used to fend off Dementors. A Patronus can take on a non-corporeal form where it appears as a silver mist, but it can also take on a corporeal form.

A Patronus can appear as an animal or magical beast in its corporeal form. What shape it takes is directly tied to the witch or wizard that casts it. It is usually influenced by the caster's emotions and experiences, particularly thoughts of joy, hope, and happiness. To cast a Patronus, you must use the incantation Expecto Patronum. The form of your Patronus will likely match your personality and that of the creature it appears as.

Not all witches and wizards can conjure a Patronus, as this is an advanced spell. However, some notable witches and wizards have been seen using a Patronus, with many taking on special forms. You can determine your own Patronus through the Patronus quiz on Wizarding World. Here are all Patronus and some notable casters in Harry Potter.

When taking the Patronus quiz, try to answer each question as true to yourself as you can. A Patronus is a direct representation of your feelings, so be honest with how you answer. A Patronus will reflect your personality, such as a Dragon Patronus showing you are a fierce fighter or a Unicorn Patornus showing you have a healing gift. Feel free to share what Patronus you get with us; I got a Newfoundland!
