How to make the Ballista in Valheim – Weapon Crafting Guide

A defense that bites back.

Valheim's Mistlands update added a ton of new items that included weapons, armor, and new resources, but one of the lesser know additions is the Ballista. However, building a Ballista in Valheim is challenging as you need to gather hard-to-get resources and make specific items.

How to make a Ballista in Valheim

To make a Ballista in Valheim, you need 10 Black Metal10 Yggdrasil Wood, and three Mechanical springs. On top of the resource requirements, you need one workbench placed nearby. Here's where you can find all the required resources for a Ballista listed below:

  • How to make Black Metal - To make Black Metal in Valheim, you first must gather Black Metal Scrap. You can get Black Metal by slaying the goblin-like enemies in the Plains biome. These enemies are called Fulings, and you can find them wandering around or inside Fuling forts and villages. After you get Black Metal Scrap, you can turn it into Black Metal by throwing it inside a Blast Furnace.
  • How to make Mechanical Springs - To make Mechanical Springs, you first need an Artisan Table. If you already have an Artisan Table, you can make the springs using one Refined Eitr and three Iron bars
  • Where to find Yggdrasil Wood - To find and harvest Yggdrasil Wood, you must head to the Mistlands biome. Inside the Mistlands Biome, you can harvest Yggdrasil Wood by chopping down Yggdrasil Shoots. Yggdrasil Shoots grow up high on rocks and often near ancient glowing roots.

How to use the Ballista in Valheim

After making the Ballista in Valheim, players can use it as a defense turret to slay enemies near their base. However, players should only place the Ballista in an area they won't travel through. In short, the Ballista targets both players and hostile/non-hostile mobs. We recommend placing the Ballista outside your walls and making an alternative entrance to avoid getting hit by Ballista bolts. You must also make Black Metal Ballista Bolts and load them into the Ballistas before you can use Ballistas to defend your base.

How to place the Ballista in Valheim

To place the Ballista in Valheim is simple, like with most objects in the game. In short, you need a hammer equipped on your hot bar and with the hammer in hand, right-click to open the Build menu. After opening the Build menu, locate the Ballista under the Misc tab. Under Misc, find the Ballista, select it and then left-click to place it on the ground.
