How to solve the chessboard puzzle in Safhe Shatranj in Genshin Impact

Safhe Shatranj is an area located southwest of Genshin Impact's Desert of Hadramaveth. It's architecturally modeled after a giant chessboard, with motifs that reflect important monuments in the desert. If you manage to install Activation Devices on all Chess Pieces, you'll be rewarded with seven Remarkable Chests and the Wonders of the World Achievement called La Luna Rossa.

Prerequisites for the Genshin Impact Safhe Shatranj chessboard puzzle

Before starting this exploration objective, you first need to complete all of the following:

• The Dirge of Bilqis
  • Wisdom Has Built Her House, She Has Hewn Out Her Seven Pillars
  • The Temple Where Sand Flows Like Tears
  • Dune-Entombed Fecundity: Part I
  • Dune-Entombed Fecundity: Part II
  • Dune-Entombed Fecundity: Part III
  • The Eternal Dream, Ever Lush
• Tadhla the Falcon
  • Tadhla the Falcon
  • “The Falcon’s Hunt”
  • The Fallen Falcon
• Apocalypse Lost
  • Collect five Chess Pieces
  • Memories of Gurabad

Once all of the above is complete, Activation Devices will spawn near their respective monuments all over the desert.

All 7 Activation Device locations in Genshin Impact

You can collect the Activation Devices below in any order. Keep in mind that they won't appear if you're missing any of the above prerequisites. If you have completed the prerequisites and don't see the Activation Devices, please double-check your Quest Item inventory as you may have already picked them up.

Activation Device: Border Fort

Head to the Teleport Waypoint in Aaru Village, then turn right to find a floating object, which is the Activation Device you're looking for. Approach the Activation Device and follow it like a Seelie. When it stops, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: Border Fort.

Activation Device: Soulferry

Head to the underground Teleport Waypoint west of Khemenu Temple. As soon as you enter, turn left and go up the staircase to find the Activation Device in the next room.

Approach the Activation Device and follow it like a Seelie. When it stops in front of the massive boat, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: Soulferry.

Activation Device: The Mausoleum of King Deshret

Head to the Teleport Waypoint (above ground) in The Mausoleum of King Deshret. As soon as you teleport, look behind you to find the floating Activation Device on the runway. Approach the Activation Device and follow it like a Seelie. When it stops in front of the Mausoleum, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: The Mausoleum of King Deshret.

Activation Device: King Deshret's Pillar

Head to the underground Teleport Waypoint north of The Mausoleum of King Deshret. You'll find two Anubis-like statues to the left and right of the staircase in front of you. Use the Four-Leaf Sigils to approach the staircase (where the arrow is pointing above) and follow the path forward.

The Activation Device is located at the top of the staircase. Approach it and follow it like a Seelie. When it stops inside the blue pyramid, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: King Deshret's Pillar.

Activation Device: Khaj-Nisut

Head to the Teleport Waypoint west of Khaj-Nisut. Go down the staircase and follow the path until you reach the edge of the broken bridge. Then use the Four-Leaf Sigils to travel to the opposite end, toward the main building in Khaj-Nisut.

As soon as you reach the opposite end, you'll spot the Activation Device by the edge of the broken bridge. Approach it and follow it like a Seelie. When it stops in front of the building, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: Khaj-Nisut.

Activation Device: Deshret's Glass Goblet

Head to the underground Teleport Waypoint in Mt. Damavand. You'll immediately spot the Activation Device, which you must approach to follow like a Seelie. When it finally stops moving, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: Deshret's Glass Goblet.

Activation Device: Temple of Gurabad

Head to the Teleport Waypoint east of Safhe Shatranj, then follow the path on the left until you reach the pyramid-shaped entrance, where the arrow is pointing above.

Once you reach the foot of the pyramid, go up the stairs until you find the Activation Device. Approach it and follow it like a Seelie. When it stops at the edge of the building, interact with it to get the Quest Item called Activation Device: Temple of Gurabad.

How to use the Activation Devices in Genshin Impact

After collecting all Activation Devices, head to the chessboard in Sadhe Shatranj to find the Chess Pieces, which are miniature versions of all the important landmarks in the desert. Approach the glowing blue spot in each of them to Install their corresponding Activation Devices in any order. For the floating platform, use the Four-Leaf Sigil to propel you upward and reach it.

Every installation will reward you with a Remarkable Chest, where you can get the following Furnishing Blueprints:

• Listening Candelight
• Hued Vase: Molten Sand
• Two-way Iron Lamp
• Hued Vase: Sprout
• "Realizations from the Land of Wisdom"
• Nightwatcher's Candlelight
• Athel Triple Drawer Cabinet

Once all seven have been installed, you'll unlock the Wonders of the World Achievement called La Luna Rossa. Additionally, you can interact with the monuments to Trigger Chess Piece, which will teleport you to the actual location of the landmarks in the desert.
